Art Chicas Unidas returns to La Reunion TX Gallery in Dallas

La Reunion TX, a not for profit artist residency, presents the second annual Art Chicas Unidas in collaboration with Dallas Art Dealers Association, Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas and Deaf Action Center Texas on Saturday, November 8, 2008 with an all day workshop. A reception open to the public will be 4:30 – 6:00 p.m. at the LRTX Gallery at 2129 Farrington in Dallas. Art Chicas Unidas unites junior high and high school girls and adult female mentor artists. The pilot program was funded last year by Dallas Women’s Foundation. Professional women, called Mentor Madres, from all walks of life in the Dallas area keep the program alive by sponsoring girls to go through the program. Central Market is the sponsor for refreshments.

On Saturday, November 8, 2008 adult mentor artists will lead teams of junior high and high school girls from targeted inner-city schools in a day long project with the goal that the girls co-host an exhibit showing an artifact they have created that same evening. During lunch, members of DADA will lead a demonstration of the real-life essentials of how to create an artist portfolio as well as a talk on various arts-related careers. A reception will be open to their families and the public at the end of the day long workshops. Proceeds from the sale of art will go back into the program. The La Reunion TX artist selection committee is made up of Dallas area arts professionals who choose adult mentor artists for this program.

La Reunion is a Texas non-profit established to create an artist residency program with a future home to be located on a generously donated 35 acre wooded property seven miles from downtown, very near the original La Reunion colony settled in Oak Cliff over 150 years ago. Soon, La Reunion TX will be launching a capital campaign to fund and build facilities with the intention to incorporate sustainable design and renewable energy, providing a model to the community for green living. The "traditional media" studios and "new media" studios each with attached living quarters will accommodate four to one hundred artists per year with residencies ranging from one week to one year. The "Living Room" will provide intimate classroom, performance, exhibit, and installation space. La Reunion TX just wrapped an international juried architecture program called Make Space for Art that yielded 68 entries from 19 countries to dream this future facility. Jessica Stewart is president of the board of directors, which also includes Lisa Taylor, Allison Graham, Billy Ware, James Estes, James West, Betsy Healy, Mark Gunderson, Dan Hughes, Katherine Owens and Noel Navarette. Catherine Cuellar and Sarah Jane Semrad are co-founders and Sarah Jane is executive director.

The meaning of..... or the term ...Cultural Wasteland, has to end in this Citie's reputation, and let's hope the new kind of arts events that come into this decade, will bring about and support this kind of well meaning intention, that making art and good art can do so... so all people can benefit ..while these people are having fun...,some of it is about money and the rest is about good fun making art, I hope this event can deliver both, until then.
