Dallas-Fort Worth area leads the nation in apartment construction
Most of the development around Dallas is in Collin County, specifically West Plano, Allen, and McKinney
DALLAS With more than 20,000 apartments under development in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, we have the highest apartment construction in America, followed by Houston in the #2 slot, Austin #3, Phoenix #4, and Atlanta #5.
Most of the development around Dallas is in Collin County: West Plano, Allen, and McKinney.
But don't get your hopes up; it's supposed to slow down.

But... people have been telling me that I've been throwing my money away by renting!

No Pavel, they've been telling you that you're throwing money away - period. That ashcan beside your snazzy refrigerator box is not the landlord's office drop-box.
And about that planter behind your "entertainment center"...

I always lol when people tell me I'm throwing my money away by renting, considering a home's property taxes and insurance alone are about what I pay (slight difference is more than made up for in loan interest, maintenance, etc).
Owning your own place is awesome...when you truly own it. Doubt I'd get myself into anything I couldn't payoff within 10-15 years. Clearly I'm of the mind people shouldn't be bailed out of mortgages they got themselves into.
Even if that means getting an apartment instead of your 5 bedroom house you're paying for as a $30,000 millionaire, so be it. http://www.allbusiness.com/government...
