TWU exhibit will feature works by Nate Larson and students

Texas Woman’s University will host artist Nate Larson’s “Burden of Proof” and highlight the work of TWU graduate students in graphic design during two shows running concurrently in the university’s galleries.

The exhibits run Monday, Nov. 17 through Friday, Nov. 21, with an opening reception scheduled from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18. The reception will follow an artist’s lecture with Mr. Larson from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in the foyer of the Fine Arts Building, located on the south side of Pioneer Circle at Oakland Avenue on TWU’s Denton campus. The reception, lecture and exhibition are free and open to the public.

Nate Larson’s “Burden of Proof,” showing in the West Gallery, is a series of digital photographs that record seemingly mundane yet intriguing circumstances that Mr. Larson investigates. In one, he compares the “lucky” numbers on the back of fortune cookie sayings to find the luckiest ones and investigates what, if anything, the saying on the front may have to do with that luck. In another, Mr. Larson explores Internet search engines to see what has been recorded about him. Finding many others with his name, he presents a picture of each person.

Mr. Larson’s work has been exhibited throughout the United States and featured internationally in exhibitions in Canada, Greece, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain and the United Kingdom. He earned a bachelor of arts degree from Purdue University and a master of fine arts from Ohio State University. He holds a tenured teaching appointment at Elgin Community College in Illinois.

“Type + Image,” exhibited in the East Gallery, features the work of TWU graduate students in graphic design. The students were asked to think about the visual imagery in our culture today and to consider the variety of relationships created by the combination of type and image. The work takes final form as 12 panel groupings or narrative pages that embody the message created.
