Euless makes list of “best, most affordable towns to raise kids” by BusinessWeek magazine

— Euless has been deemed one of the "best, most affordable towns for raising children" in the U.S. of A. from a list compiled by BusinessWeek magazine. (And thanks to Overheard for sussing this out in the first place.)

From the story:

We knocked out towns with populations of fewer than 50,000 and median household incomes of less than $40,000 or more than $100,000. And we ended up with a list that included some well-known places such as Phoenix, Columbus, Ohio, and Ann Arbor, Mich. But we also found some hidden gems such as Euless, Tex., smack in between Dallas and Fort Worth, which according to Sports Illustrated has the nation's top-ranked high school football team ... Our population threshold of 50,000 people limited our options in less-populous states such as Delaware, Vermont, and West Virginia. But our criteria helped us find ethnically and culturally diverse places with the kind of amenities that are more often found in population centers.

Pavel Lishin, says:

When I have kids, I'm going to choose their high school based on their football standing.

Seriously, though, I hope my hypothetical children love chess. I'm going to cry if I have to sit through four years of football.

4? You forgot about Jr. Pee Wee league.

Do we have any Dallas rappers starting up a league for your future kids? (high waisted pants only, natch)

Pavel, I simply hope your hypothetical children live long enough to attend high school...much less remain healthy enough to play a contact sport.

Pavel Lishin, says:

Scott, you're a genius. I'll ensure my kids don't force me to sit through boring sports by malnourishing them! Looks like calcium deficiency's gonna become a family tradition.

Scott Doyle, says:

Well Mr. Lishin, I figure there's a reasonable chance you'll knock up an asian...meaning lactose intolerance is more likely than otherwise and calcium from dairy is out of the question. Steady ramen diet won't help matters, leaving beets as their sole source. With your history of not bothering to obtain health insurance - they're in for a grind.

Travis Bush, says:

Doyle..one also assumes that Pavel will use at least a couple of the children for unethical medical experiments. They will either turn out like LOTR golems or Mary Shelley's monster, so they have a 50/50 chance of excelling at sports.

Depends on your interpretation of "ethical", T-Bush.

Pavel Lishin, says:

Please, I'll use the neighbor's children for any unsavory medical experiments.

I wonder how many rats you can hook up to a person's circulatory system before their additional livers allow someone to drink with no fear of cirrhosis...

We all know you'll revert to your own when you run out of neighborhood children, sir.

If you guys want, you can have a fundraiser to pay for my vasectomy, but I'll just take the money and go on a week-long bender in Canada.

I vote we have a fundraiser for straps strong enough to hold you down while med students perform a complimentary vasectomy during training.

I'll be sure to throw in extra for a device to keep your eyes open through the duration.
