Lincoln letter found in Dallas Historical Society archives awaits verification
not provided by Dallas Historical Society, Abraham Lincoln or his heirs
If you've never heard of the "Bixby Letter," or if it sounds vaguely familiar, just reference the movie Saving Private Ryan ('98), in which its text is quoted. The letter was purportedly written by President Abraham Lincoln, addressed to a Mrs. Bixby in Boston who was thought to have lost five sons in battle during the Civil War.
Now, a copy of the letter - which appears to be written on paper and using inks consistent with a Civil War time period - has turned up in the archives of the Dallas Historical Society in Fair Park.
The document has been sent to Christie's auction house in New York for an expert opinion on its provenance. If it's a genuine government copy (which some experts doubt), it could be worth millions of dollars.
