McKinney Police Department gets Tasers
It's only a matter of time before McKinney police officers start tasing themselves.
The McKinney Police Department now has Tasers, the "electronic control devices" that render uncooperative suspects temporarily incapable of voluntary movement, the McKinney Courier-Gazette reported Friday.
According to the Gazette, police Lt. Scott Brewer confirmed police officers are undergoing training to carry ECDs in the field while some officers have already been trained and are carrying the devices while on patrol.
“We’ve been pursuing ECDs, which is the industry standard name for these type of devices, for the last 24 months,” Brewer said. “There was no single one incident or any single situation has occurred that prompted us to get Tasers.
“This is definitely a tool that is becoming more and more common practice for law enforcement agencies to issue to their officers,” Brewer said.
Tasers use compressed nitrogen capsules to fire two small metal probes into a subject’s body. The probes are connected to strands of insulated wire through which an electrical signal is transmitted. Once a probe pierces the skin, an immediate loss of neuromuscular control is expierienced for the duration of the impulse.
