Vickery Park, casual restaurant-bar on Henderson, to open second branch in old downtown Plano

— A second branch of Vickery Park, the casual restaurant-bar on Henderson Avenue in Dallas that's a favorite after-hours haunt of restaurant and service-industry employees, is opening on 15th Street in Plano, around the end of January.

Construction at the location, which was previously the short-lived Four G's Grill, is already underway with a sign in the window.

It's opening across the street from the Fillmore Pub, the hip restaurant-bar opened by a group of ex-employees of the popular Irish restaurant-pub Old Monk on Henderson Avenue.

"Fillmore being up there was one of the catalysts," said an employee at the Dallas branch. "The brick streets, the pedestrian vibe, all of that made it a welcoming spot. It's quaint. It's a Vickery Park environment."

Leading one to breathlessly, optimistically wonder if 15th Street Plano is about to become the next Henderson Avenue? All it needs is a Consilient Group entity like Fireside Pies. Yes? Fireside Pies in old downtown Plano? Yes? A person can dream.

The old Vickery Park Saloon not far from the old train station of Vickery for cotton men who would preform plantation work for the Caruth family, dating back to the 1880s too...And now it's time to exspand another watering hole soon..until then.. A./T..Railroad History.

Since Fireside Pies and Grimaldi's both have representation in Plano, I think Olivella's should scope out a spot in downtown Plano. That would be rockin.

fireside pies is exactly the opposite of what downtown plano needs...please, no chains attracting soccer moms and their spawn, the stereotypes at kelly's are bad enough..

have not tried cafe roma

Grimaldi's is fine but they're very specifically "new york pizza". they're a great new york pizza (<a href="http://www.pegasusnews.com/news/2007/oct/03/dallas-get-its-own-branch-famed-new-york-pizzeria-/#c16157">some people</a> would say they're the best)... but i'm less interested in New York pizza than i am the artisanal style that Fireside Pies offers. for me, Fireside is world-class -- on a par with pizzas being made in California and Arizona

<strong>crust</strong>: Fireside's crust has a more interesting texture and flavor (Grimaldi's has good texture but not as much flavor)

<strong>toppings</strong>: Fireside's options easily exceed Grimaldi's. Fireside uses thickly sliced tomatoes, smoked cheese, prosciutto, they even have a pizza with SALAD on top. Grimaldi's is basically meat, meat, and meat. the only "greenery" they offer is a couple of leaves of fresh basil for a frigging $2 surcharge. no thanks.

<strong>local</strong>: Fireside uses Jimmy's sausage and Paula Lambert's cheese. and they take an artisanal approach to their ingredients. the red onions, for example, are roasted until soft, and left in big chunks where you can really appreciate that you're eating onion and not some invisible dice.

--

i don't really view Fireside Pies as a chain, in a derogatory light. they have, what, three branches? and all local? but i don't have any kneejerk revulsion towards a chain. i'm a big fan of Calif Pizza Kitchen, as well, and was very grateful to have them in the dallas area before Fireside Pies came along and revolutionized the local pizza scene.

i like olivella's OK, but they're not consistent, so i don't cite them as a favorite. i would certainly welcome them to 15th Street. i would welcome grimaldi's as well but with a branch right up the road in allen, it seems unlikely they'll open a branch in plano

thank you for asking. talking about pizza is absolutely my favorite thing to do, which is surely obvious by the length of this response

Sure, it's probably old news to somebody, but I am pleasantly surprised to have a new neighbor.

I really need to visit Plano some day and discover the open country north of 635. Is there cattle up there? Indians?

After dark it's easier for me to move around. Daylight, I still have to go incognito

Catch me if you can

Snowboard, the cannibal problem is still rampant so wear chain mail, but we have drained all the lava pits north of the Bushway and the flesh-eating dragons are nearly completely under control in the winter months.
