Construction begins on apartment/retail building at Cole and Lemmon in Uptown Dallas

Email Print Tell us your story Comments (16)

— Construction has begun on a five-story apartment/retail building at the corner of Cole and Lemmon. The site, which is right by the Katy Trail, has been earmarked for a number of developments that never happened, including one in the '80s that was supposed to be a country club and hotel that was eventually abandoned and left as a huge hole to collect water which the city had to spend $1 million to fill.

The current development, which will have 300 apartment units and space for two restaurants, is by Inland American Communities Group which is also developing an apartment-retail complex on Lemmon Avenue north of the Tollway called Cityville Oak Park, and another apartment-retail complex on Haskell Avenue where the Loews movie theater was called Cityville @ Cityplace.

The Big Hole as it was in the local Rag, and it was In the 1980's is correct, I recall seeing the depth in the Austin Chalk and Shale as it was cut out and when it would rain and fill up like a hudge swimming pool, they lost million's on that hole in one, while that was the edge of Little Mexico and the old Cole Ave Community dating back to the 1890's, and now it will fill a whole block in developement...they wont find much down there in the hole except million's of dollar's of dirt, until then..A/T, Dirt Adviser.

Someone must have forgot to tell them they were supposed to use dirt, not hundred dollar bills to fill the hole.

Why does it not surprise me that Dallas would find a way to waste a million bucks to fill in a hole?

And is this really Carlisle and Lemmon? I looked at satellite maps and don't see any empty corners on Cole and Lemmon

clay, the street name changes from cole to carlisle right there at the intersection of lemmon. so both you and the DMN get to be right. yay.

i spent a ridiculous amount of time while entering this story trying to figure out which corner they were talking about. i am pretty sure it's the open field that's kitty-corner from Texas Land & Cattle.

i never realized the street name changed right there; i thought it became carlisle a few blocks further down the road. cole is weird - it starts up again like a half block south on lemmon. i used to live in that area when i first moved to dallas, and never noticed that

Your right T.G, while the Bank across the street has an address, and the lot is backing up near some heavy power lines, over all it is one of the last blocks in the area undeveloped, could be a great bomb shelter and then again, there should be one more retail in the area...A./T.

You welcome,T.G... how else do we serve a community that is now going to have to learn all over again, and it never will from the 1988 bust, while lots of building's were torn down, many lot's were vacant until the Clinton years..Dallas is the biggest Bust stop or Bus stop in the Southwest, from Hotel's and rooms and rent a house to own, are the cash cow's from Taxes to Inheritance, while land is oil here, until then.A/T,..Historian.

It's Cole south bound, thru the west bound 1-way Lemmon lights, 1 short block to east bound 1-way Lemmon. At the lights there, it changes to Carlisle and stays that way.

All the way until it splits and one leg goes left to McKinney and Carlisle bears right to Cedar Springs. I drove that route every day to work for 8+ years.

The HOLE in the ground was shut down around the last crash in 1988, when the S & L crisis came about, there was a very deep impact,to create basement, parking and office's in the Austin Chalk, I recall... that had to be cut out and hauled away... while the Cresent has the deepest car parking basement in the area, this lot was also Cut very deep into rock.. While the Hole in the ground is still a very good center to build, you will have to sink a possible 325 foot pylon to secure a stable foundation post...A.T.. Rock hound.
