Texas Woman’s University receives $416,000 estate gift

The Texas Woman’s University Foundation has received a $416,000 gift from the estate of longtime Denton resident Celia Jamison Sankey.

The unrestricted gift from the TWU alumna will be used by the foundation in its mission to support the university.

Mrs. Sankey, who passed away Feb. 8, 2008, received her bachelor’s degree in art from the Texas State College for Women (now TWU) in 1941. She taught art at the university for several years until her retirement.

Mrs. Sankey had left her entire estate to her brother and sister-in-law, Alonzo W. Jamison Jr. and Elizabeth Jamison of Denton. The trust provided that in the event the Jamisons did not survive her, the estate would be divided between Mrs. Sankey’s church and the TWU Foundation. The Jamisons decided to disclaim their interest under the trust and distribute the money to the church and the foundation.

“We wanted to follow her wishes and honor her gift to TWU,” said Mr. Jamison, a former Texas State Representative and former professor and chairman of the government department at TWU. Mrs. Jamison, a 1943 art graduate from TWU, and her husband are members of the university’s Old Main Society and Chancellor’s Circle. Both also are longtime supporters of the university and the TWU Foundation.
