Fort Worth ISD volunteer to be honored by State Board of Education
Stuart volunteers four days a week tutoring students and holds a once-a-week spelling session with dyslexic third graders. Quite the inspiration to all of us that spend our free time watching reruns of House.
FORT WORTH — The Texas State Board of Education will honor Fort Worth ISD school volunteer Stuart Foster as a Hero for Children on Friday, November 21, 2008, in Austin. Mr. Foster was recommended by citizens in the Benbrook area for his outstanding volunteer service at Benbrook Elementary School.
Mr. Foster was originally scheduled to be among more than a dozen volunteers honored by the State Board at its regular meeting in September. But that meeting was canceled by threatening weather.
Susan Hill was the principal at Benbrook Elementary last year when Mr. Foster was recommended for consideration.
“Stuart is a great guy who would make an interesting interview. He is having a ball and wants everyone to know how much fun volunteering is. I wish we could clone his enthusiasm!”
When the new school year got underway, Mr. Foster hit the ground running, continuing to offer his time to the children of FWISD.
“We’re all very excited. I can’t express how grateful I am for all the support and encouragement you’ve given me over the last two years, said Mr. Foster. “This year has started fast. I’ve already read stories to all four kindergarten classes and discussed a before school tutoring schedule for several students. My cup runneth over.”
Foster volunteers four days a week and works tirelessly with twenty-one students in several grades each week. He tutors these students in reading, phonics, spelling, math and science. To help dyslexic students, Mr. Foster studied the Scottish Rite dyslexia training and currently holds a once-a-week spelling session with dyslexic third graders.
The State Board of Education will meet at 9:00 a.m. in Room 1-104 of the William B. Travis Building, 1701 N. Congress Avenue.
