Zlew.net’s late November live local music picks
Every time I start to write these things, I tell myself that I am going to make it short and sweet, but that never seems to actually be the way things turn out. As I begin to write this, I have brevity in mind. We’ll see if I am successful in my endeavor.
Show numero uno on the recommendation list for the end of November - David Garza at Club Dada, Nov 22nd.
The first time I saw David play, I had high expectations. I had heard his name tossed around by some of my favorite musicians, and they always spoke so highly of him. I was happy to find that David lived up to the hype at his solo birthday party show. When you see David play, you see a veteran expert musician. His songs are invigorating, and his skills on the guitar will amaze anyone within ear shot. The songs are well written, and the way he performs them adds something extra that is difficult to explain other than to say (and this sounds cheesy I know) that you don’t just hear his songs, you also feel them. The show is for his CD release, and Sunward, Rahim Quazi & Morning Elephant will also be playing. I’ve never heard Morning Elephant, but I have seen Sunward and Rahim play before, and I think they will both complement David’s show nicely.
That same night (Nov 22nd), you will find me at this next show: Rockn’ For Rescue Foundation presents Patrice Pike and Fishing for Comets at Salon Nights on the Levee.
Those who know me probably realize that the biggest college football game in the history of of my University is that night, and to see this show I am going to miss a lot of the game (thank god for DVR, and if any of you guys text me with the score I will track you down and remove your liver with a spoon…or maybe I just need to turn off my phone to avoid possible bloodshed :) ). I think this show will be worth the sacrifice. First of all, it is for a good cause. Second, the musicians are both some of my favorite live acts. Patrice Pike flat out rocks! Some of you might remember Patrice from Sister Seven, while others may have seen her a few years ago on Tommy Lee’s reality TV show Rock Star Supernova. Her sound and style takes up a broad part of the musical spectrum. She can play the from a really vocal singer-songwriter style music, to jamming out on the electric guitar. This show is a full band show, and if I were a betting man, I’d guess that Patrice will be getting her rock on Saturday night. She will not disappoint!
Fishing for Comets is a local rock/pop band that I have been following for about a year now. The band is jam packed with musical talent; those of you from the Dallas area will probably recognize Eric Neal (master of all things musical) who has played in more great bands around the area than I can even count. The lead vocals will be brought to you by Miss Camille Cortinas, and all I can say is that these guys are one of the most talented and entertaining shows around town. If you like energetic, upbeat fun music, you will love Fishing For Comets.
The event is to raise money for Rockin for Rescue; in their own words, here is what they are about:
"We are a non-profit organization, Pending 501c3 that raises awareness and money through art and music. We are all volunteers, no one is paid and the money goes towards other non-profit 501c3 animal rescues. Usually ones that are in a crisis. We also give smaller donations for spay and neutering when we can. Because of the economy more people have been dropping off animals and of course not as many are adopting either."

I just learned a few things about Morning Elephant, and added their info to my original post on www.zlew.net. I'll add links below (not sure if html works in the comments section or not). Morning Elephant is one of Manya's project (she is also in Blue Petal). Manya kicks butt, and the stuff I have listened to this morning from Morning Elephant is pretty sweet.
