Dallas ISD trustees vote to extend their terms

While protesters carried on protesting outside, members of the Dallas Independent School District Board of Trustees voted by a margin of 7-2 to extend their terms of office to four years, meaning that everyone currently serving on the board would continue to do so until May of 2010.

This measure comes, of course, in the midst of massive teacher layoffs and disclosures of impropriety. However, the board members who supported the measure note that the term extensions will mean a savings of $270,000 on the years that do not involve an election proceeding.

Unsurprisingly, none of the three board members up for re-election in 2009 (Leigh Ann Ellis, Edwin Flores and Ron Price) cast a "no" vote in regard to the term extensions. The two who did - Carla Ranger and Adam Medrano - cited questions of legality and timing, respectively.
