Assassination City Roller Derby set to keep it rolling in 2009

With its 2009 calendar hot-off-the-press, a newly crowned championship team and next season already on the horizon, Assassination City Roller Derby has had a lot on its plate…and they don’t plan to slow down anytime soon.

The four-year-old league just released its 2009 calendar and, as it turns out, these athletes’ creativity is just as strong as their skating. Each month of the glossy, high-quality calendar pays tribute to a famous cult movie classic as interpreted by--you guessed it--derby girls on skates. Vanna Rockin', a two-year veteran of the league, flashed a proud grin as she flipped through its pages for the first time. "I'm getting them for all of my friends this Christmas! It's definitely the best calendar we've done so far. It reflects the energy and excitement of our league and the optimism of our 2009 season."

And what a season 2009 is going to be! Beginning in January, Assassination City Roller Derby has committed its all-star travel team to several away bouts, including many outside Texas, to compete with other high-profile leagues for Women’s Flat Track Derby Association rankings.

Of course, ACRD hasn't forgotten about its loyal fan base at home. With three hungry home teams ready to battle it out on the rink and an all-out production spectacle that includes performances by local bands such as the Big Guns and Spector 45, and resident soundtrack spinner, DJ Sista Whitenoise, Assassination City never disappoints. "We have several, super competitive home bouts planned for our upcoming season at Dad's (Broadway Skateland). The Deadly Kennedys and the Lone Star Assassins can't wait to annihilate the Bombshell Brigade next season!" declares Pyro Maim Ya.

At the Championship Bout last Saturday night, the Bombshell Brigade pulled out an amazing 116-32 victory over the Lone Star Assassins, claiming their rightful place as Assassination City Roller Derby's 2008 Champions.

Rockstar skaters like Harassiz Mine, Mona Brus'r and Mary-Ate Ashley led the Bombshells to victory, while Lone Star Assassins Brandi Danger, Red Hot Rage and rookie, the Dixie Witch, fought hard in the first half. Although LSA started strong, it was the expert maneuvering and exceptional teamwork of the well-oiled machine that is the Bombshell Brigade that finally tired out the "dark horses of derby" and cinched the 2008 championship. Bombshell Brigade member and league General Manager Massey Graves couldn't be happier about it, "Do I think we'll win again next season? Who knows. They say lightning doesn't strike twice, but I do."

Assassination City Roller Derby, a proud member of the nationwide Women's Flat Track Derby Association, will host its 2009 regular season home games on the third Saturday of every month--beginning in March--at Dad's Broadway Skateland in Mesquite.
