Martini Park at Shops at Legacy in Plano is closed down
Restaurant-bar had an aggressive door policy complete with muscled goons.
DALLAS Martini Park, the restaurant-bar at the Shops at Legacy, is closed, as scooped by Nancy N. No one's answering the phone during business hours and an anonymous email confirmed that the place was shut down.
This seems rather surprising and abrupt since the place had holiday events on their schedule, and since they never seemed to lack for business, although it was mostly business of the drinky kind rather than the eating kind.
Another surprising thing about this is that other places opening in the Shops at Legacy are doing very well, such as RA Sushi and Gordon Biersch Brewery. Maybe the customers who previously went to Martini Park have moved on to those places instead?
Some people -- people who got rejected at the door -- might see this as karma, since they had a pretty aggressive and belittling door policy, with muscled goons who wouldn't let you in if you had on sneakers. Muscled goons who themselves occasionally wore sneakers. Now it's nice to see an establishment set a standard and strive for a classy atmosphere, but even if you were well-kempt in every other way, if you had on sneakers, you didn't get in. Bet they'd take customers with sneakers now.

the person i know who got rejected had on your typical New Balance workout type shoes. but is otherwise neat as a pin. whereas the person he was with, ahem, she had scraggly hair and not an upscale outfit at all - but no sneakers, so no problem getting in. i mean, i kinda get the no sneakers rule, cuz sneakers often do imply cheesy style or just no style at all. but it can also be a dumb rule

Well thats what happens when a bar losses their liquor license..... any how $7 dollar beers for that price i best have some dancing girls and leave covered in glitter from a champaigne room... but yes they are closed due to loss of liquor license... no they could just give away their stock of liquor for free rather than charge to repay for the high cover price!!!

Note that Tuesday is also 'bailout beer' night at Pearl - $2 domestics and $1 pearl cans. So what happens if you bring a sneaker?
1) we'll let you in !
2) you get bailout beer !! (unless the sneaker smells bad and in that case you just get regular happy hour prices, but only if it's during happy hour)

If I recall correctly, Shiner's considered domestic rather than premium (strictly price-wise)? Confirm/deny? Blue Moon, maybe?!

another emailer shares this juicy dish: that Martini Park closed due to troubles with their liquor license (as hinted by jenglund, above). They were supposed to sell a specific percentage of food-versus-alcohol but the food never took off. They even resorted to giving the food away, but their percentage of beverage sales was still too high for the TABC.
this would explain why they closed despite the impression of prosperity they gave

tx_dem41, simply b/c it isn't extraordinary doesn't mean the TABC will loosen up on their regs. Surely they have a notification/warning system in place that gives you x-amount of time to get your respective food/booze sales ratio where it should be.
From what I recall when I was in food service, TABC absolutely does not mess around. They work with you best they can but their deadlines are truly deadlines.

I was wondering how they were able to stay open! The law in Plano is very clear about selling alcohol. The liquor sales need to be less than 50% of their revenue. I'm really pissed off because I thought about opening a bar in Plano but ultimately couldn't figure out a way to do it legally. Then Martini Park opens up OBVIOUSLY breaking the law. It's shameful that Plano and the TABC let it stay open for so long.
I think part of why it was open for so long is that the jurisdiction for enforcement of the laws is murky. The TABC and the Comptroller and the City of Plano all think someone other than them is responsible for enforcing the 50% law.
Don't get me wrong -- I'm all for having liquor sales in Plano. The laws should be changed, but you've got to play fairly until they do.

this is what I got from the TABC...
My name is Ronald Meissner. I am an internal affairs investigator with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, stationed in Austin, Texas. We are in receipt of your e-mail concerning Martini Park in Plano, Texas. First, let me assure you that TABC laws and regulations are uniform statewide and are no stricter in Plano than other areas of the state, which have been voted "Dry" by its residents.
I reviewed the TABC records for Martini Park. Let me try to explain what appears to have happened. Sometime in the past, through a Local Option Election, Plano area was voted a "Dry" area, except for restaurants that also served food with alcohol. The Texas Comptrollers certify these restaurants with a "Food and Beverage Certificate," which means that a restaurant has to gross 51% of its sales from food. Apparently, the Texas Comptrollers did not certify Martini Park as a "restaurant" and thus did not did renew their "Food and Beverage Certificate." In order for Martini Park to lawfully sell alcohol in the Plano area they must have this certificate. When they could not obtain their food and beverage certificate, Martini Park was no longer eligible to sell alcohol in the Plano area and thus TABC could not renew its permit.
I hope this helped. I apologize for any inconvenience this my have caused you. If you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us again in the future. Ronald S. Meissner, Investigator VI Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission

Plano lost a really good thing with Martini Park. It was, Hands Down, the coolest bar in Texas... a total upscale metro scene with lots of beautiful people. If you were offended at getting turned away at the door, then you probably shouldn't have been at the place anyway. To keep it's exclusivity, a club has to be somewhat selective. I recommend, to those of you that were bitter about their strict dress code, that you go hang out at Dukes Roadhouse, or Sherlocks.

I am sad, but relieved! Many of us had been there since the doors opened. Being on the inside as an employee, I have many reasons I was thankful it shut down. I don't have to watch one more person slip off their wedding ring to go to the hotel down the street with some random bar rat. I don't have to listen to someone get ticked off because they only had one drink and argue with me as they lean on the bar holding themselves up, forgetting about the mambo taxi's they had at dinner. I don't have to watch this showoff trying to impress his friends tip us $0 on a $100.00+ tab and then run off into the crowd. Believe it or not 1/3 of the tabs were like that. Money was great when we opened, but eventually we were begging each other for shifts and trying to wait it out hoping things would get better. All this negative was what we put up with daily, and your saying well you should've quit. I speak for everyone in there, we had the BEST staff, and most of us will remain friends. I don't know many places with that many employee's talk daily to help each other find jobs or relay over potential opportunities to each other. We all split the nights earnings and trusted each other to put money in the tip jar when a guest just wanted that one person to have it. It was worth all the make out sessions we were forced to watch, all the broke "rich" fakes, all the showoffs, all the grown adults who couldn't handle their liquor and yes, blame it on us, we forced you to drink it. Thank you Chris Barish, for letting me see what I DON'T want to be when I reach 35-65 years old (targeted market). But letting me meet some great people and paying down enough of my student loans to know I am ready to get into my career I went to school for. :)
