WaterTower Theatre (WTT) opens its 2008-2009 season with the Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Doubt, a Parable. Written by John Patrick Shanley and directed by WTT Producing Artistic Director Terry Martin, Doubt, a Parable will run October 2 – 26.
Father Flynn, a charismatic young priest, is adored by his students; Sister Aloysius, an unbending principal, is pleased by the fear she invokes in them. When Father Flynn begins to take special interest in a new student, Sister Aloysius begins to think the unthinkable. But when a nun’s suspicion is weighed against the word of a priest, how does one determine the truth? The winner of 24 major awards, Doubt, a Parable is a gripping exploration of the question, “What do you do when you’re not sure?”
A New York playwright, Shanley earned almost overnight recognition with his 1984 play, Danny and the Deep Blue Sea. Other notable plays include Savage in Limbo, Psychopathia Sexualis, and Defiance. In the arena of screenwriting, he has eight movies to his credit, most recently Live From Baghdad for HBO, for which he received an Emmy nomination. Other films include Five Corners (Special Jury Prize, Barcelona Film Festival), Alive and Joe Versus the Volcano, which he also directed. For his script of Moonstruck he received both the Writers Guild of America Award and an Academy Award for best original screenplay.
WTT’s production of Doubt, a Parable will feature Nancy Sherrard as Sister Aloysius and Regan Adair as Father Flynn. Rounding out the cast are M. Denise Lee and Jessica Wiggers. Scenic design is by John Hobbie; lighting design is by Laura McMeley. Costume design is by Aaron Patrick Turner.
