We're slowly approaching our second (my fourth) anniversary of the PegNews adventure, and it's a good time to take stock of our place in the panhypermegalocal world: Our inspirations are flying high, while we're doing the best we can. And in today's uncertain world, isn't that the best we can ask?
Metro: The financial world is gaft a gangly and as usual, Dallas figures are at the center ... Tuesday's Sheriff's debate is sure to be a beaut ... Put some more quarters in your cupholder ... Grits for Breakfast explains why the new sex offender employment registry is a mistake ... Mime doesn't pay ... I'm writing this instead of watching the Palin / Biden debate, so make your own assessment here ... Russ Martin is in marginally less trouble than a week ago ... Minnie interviewed Carrollton Mayor Ron Branson, while Wilmer got a new mayor ... Our friends at Urban South went on a rescue mission to Houston ... Habla Ingles, por favor.
Stage: John Garcia likes The Color Purple ... Meantime, Mark-Brian Sonna liked the production if not the source material behind The Hollow ... Local playwright Donnie Wilson is back with a new show ... Check in Friday for an interview with Jana Walters, a founder of McKinney Repertory Theatre and the director of their upcoming show Belles.
Flix: Check in Friday for reviews of Blindness, Appaloosa, Religulous, Flash of Genius; How to Lose Friends and Influence People; Allah Made Me Funny and Battle In Seattle.
Music: Erin was at the ACL fest ... Farewell to the Meridian Room ... Zlew has your concert picks for October.
Weekend planner
Artsy: Alex was at the All About Uptown Festival ... Bass Hall has a new head honcho ... All hail Tut! I, for one, welcome our Egyptian overlord ... Even after a decade of experience, I learned new things at the State Fair ... Catch October's art openings ...
Best Bites: "The Brad" brings us the lowdown on State Fair fried foods ... Our friends at West and Clear loved the Yucatan Taco Stand ... Jason Boso of Twisted Root and Cowboy Chow is fighting for his life ... Gay List Daily loved the food, if not the margaritas, at El Ranchito ... Halloween is coming, and it starts with soda ... [Insert weekly restaurant closing story here.]
Game: So, they're not infallible, BFD. ... Not like our college teams did any better ... All that anti-American stuff I said? And the drugs? And the illegal racing? SO didn't mean it ... This week's Cupcheck is for the ladies.
Schools: Are things getting better in the Lancaster ISD? Seems that Dallas is in bigger trouble, as positions are already eliminated. But Vegas, baby: Vegas! ... Won't you keep Denton Chido?
Bidness: Both CD World and Crystal Clear distribution closed their doors this week, putting a real dent in the local music biz ... While the word falls apart, XTO builds new palaces ... Can we and other New Mediati combat campaign spin?
