North Texas universities race for top-tier status
D/FW is the only area in the nation's top 10 most productive metropolitan areas that lacks a Tier 1 university. Area colleges and universities are now looking to change that by striving to reach Tier 1 status, a move that would cost a bundle but create thousands of jobs in the process. Some of the requirements to belong to the top-tier club include spending over $100 million on research and offering over 50 doctorate degrees. UNT, UTA and UTD are all on the short list of emerging universities in the state, however they are all looking at over a decade before they become nationally recognized research institutions.
