Richardson Regional Medical Center celebrates opening of new cancer center and outpatient hospital

Richardson Regional Medical Center has planned several events in October at its Bush/Renner Campus to commemorate the grand opening of the new cancer center and outpatient hospital. City officials and special guests came together for a ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday, October 2. The public will have a chance to visit the new facilities during a community open house on Saturday, October 11 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. In addition, several health screenings are scheduled for the month of October to promote cancer awareness.

Bush/Renner expansion.

“The outpatient hospital will be a tremendous asset to residents of east Richardson, Wylie, Sachse and Murphy, while the new cancer center will broaden treatment services for the entire North Texas region,” said Ron Boring, president and CEO of Richardson Regional. “This expansion project clearly demonstrates our continuing commitment to high-quality service by bringing excellent physicians and new medical advancements in technology to these communities.”

Located at the southeast corner of George Bush Turnpike and Renner Road, the Bush/Renner Campus outpatient hospital will have a full service emergency department staffed 24/7 by board-certified emergency medicine physicians. In addition to 18 emergency care beds, a four-bed observation unit will be available for overnight care. The emergency department can treat adults and children and all types of injuries as well as cardiac, orthopedic, obstetric and pediatric emergencies. Other services will include medical imaging, a lab and respiratory therapy.

The Richardson Regional Cancer Center, an affiliate of UT Southwestern Medical Center, is moving to its new location at the Bush/Renner Campus to bring an advanced level of cancer care to the region. The new Cancer Center will expand medical, surgical and radiation oncology, clinical research, genetic counseling, patient education and support services – all in one convenient location.

“We are very pleased with the partnership between UT Southwestern and Richardson Regional and the progress we are making in the fight against cancer. We look forward to a close association in the cancer area where the need for new treatments and preventive measures is more urgent than ever,” said Willis C. Maddrey, M.D., Executive Vice President for Clinical Affairs at UT Southwestern Medical Center. Joining in the ribbon cutting festivities will also be James K.V. Willson, M.D., Associate Dean for Cancer Programs and Director of the Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center at UT Southwestern and Barry Levinson, M.D., medical director of Richardson Regional Cancer Center and associate professor of internal medicine in hematology/oncology at UT Southwestern.

“We offer multidisciplinary care with the most advanced research, treatment protocols and technology,” said Dr. Levinson. “Patients, families and loved ones can stay close to home and have convenient access to all of the services and resources they need to fight cancer.”

The Richardson Regional Medical Center Foundation’s “Cancer Should Not Have the Last Word” capital campaign has raised $4 million through donations from community members, corporate donors, and foundations, including a $250,000 grant from The Meadows Foundation and a $1 million challenge grant from the Rees-Jones Foundation.

“We’re grateful for the support and generosity of North Texans so far, but our work is not done,” said Judy Martin, chair of the capital campaign. “We are determined to raise an additional $1 million by the end of the year to reach our overall campaign goal and our goal of providing hope for those individuals in our community facing cancer. We will not let cancer have the last word.”

The Bush/Renner campus is already home to a five-story, 100,000 square foot physician pavilion with more than 20 physicians in a full range of specialties. The total cost of the expansion project is $41 million, and it is being funded through a combination of tax-exempt bonds, a $4 million challenge grant from the City of Richardson and private contributions.
