Concert preview: New Kids on the Block and Tami Chynn

4

We’d like to file a formal complaint with the department of band names. Can New Kids On The Block, appearing this Sunday at the American Airlines Center, really still be called “kids,” or for that matter “new,” after nearly three decades in the business? Nonetheless, those whippersnappers are back on tour even though this go round “You Got It (The Right Stuff)” sounds more like an ode to Metamucil than the panty-peeler of days gone by.

Luckily Jordan, Jonathan, Donnie and crew were smart enough to realize that falsetto and fainting middle-age women wasn’t enough to make their concert hip. So, they enlisted the help of a young, female singer to perk things up.

While Jessica was busy with Romo, Gwen and Christina had their hands full with new babies and Britney – well, we’ll “leave Britney alone” – up-and-comer Tami Chynn’s schedule was wide open.

Hailing from Kingston, Jamaica, Chynn is definitely Grade-B Diva but still fun and pop with a little reggae twist. And that’s just the kind of energy a fading boy band could suck the stem cells out of.

She’s like the Hubba Bubba bubblegum that’s fun to chew for about two minutes until all of the flavor runs out, but you find yourself going back for more and more.

If you’re not familiar with Chynn by name, you might know her from her mainstream work – the cover of “Kung Fu Fighting” (with an appearance by Shaggy) that’s used in the Pepsi commercial. That girl really is “Hangin’ Tough.”

Seriously, the jokes about these guys being "old men on the block" are unoriginal and worn out. Come up with some new jokes if you must. And, when did mid to late thirties mean that you were old? I don't see articles about the Rolling Stones or Bon Jovi being old.

These concerts might be about nostalgia, but a lot of fans love both the old and the new stuff, and the New Kids' concerts are selling out because of the New Kids' not because of some up and comer. Natasha Bedingfield and Colby O'Donis are amazing. Lady Gaga is okay; though I could do without her underwear costume. But Tami Chynn? Akon can have her back. Her performance was awful!

Ok. They aren't "NEW". They aren't "kids". "Old Men on the Block". "New Kids over the Hill". Any other jokes that need to be made for the millionth time? It's the NAME of their band people. GET OVER IT. The Beatles aren't beatles. The Rolling Stones aren't stones that are rolling. I mean, come on, when a band comes back to do a reunion no one asks them WHY they have the SAME name still. WHYYYYYYYYY must we constantly sit and read an article about the New Kids and see this same old tired comment? Here's a thought! Why not go to a concert with an open mind and realize that they don't take themselves all too seriously and neither do their fans. We are all here to relive some childhood memories, have a fun night out w/ our friends and just enjoy life in a time when things are a bit scary in the world right now. Get over yourself!
