McKinney ISD’s Cockrill Middle School to be formally dedicated
The school, which officially opened in August, is named after longtime McKinney ISD Superintendent Dr. Jack Cockrill.
A dedication ceremony for McKinney ISD’s fifth middle school, Dr. Jack Cockrill Middle School, is scheduled for Sunday, October 19 from 2-4 p.m. The formal ceremony will be held in the school’s cafeteria.
Cockrill Middle School opened for the first day of school in August. The middle school is named after longtime McKinney ISD Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Jack Cockrill.
Born in 1938, Dr. Jack Cockrill began a lifelong commitment to education by earning a Bachelor of Science at Southeastern Oklahoma State University in 1961. He received a Master of Education from Southeastern Oklahoma State University in 1965 and went on to pursue a program in administrative services at the University of North Texas. He received his Doctorate of Education from Texas A&M University at Commerce in 1982.
Dr. Cockrill began his teaching career in Plano ISD in 1963 where he served as a teacher, coach, and later a principal. He went on to become the Plano ISD Assistant Superintendent for Personnel. In 1978 he became the Superintendent of Schools for Gilmer ISD. After six years of service he was named the Superintendent of Schools for Kerville ISD. In 1988 he became the Superintendent of Schools for McKinney ISD, where he served from 1988 to 1999.
Dr. Cockrill received numerous commendations during his career in Texas public schools. In 1992 he was named Region 10 Superintendent of the Year and a finalist for Texas Superintendent of the Year. He was honored with the Outstanding McKinney Citizen of the Year award in 1994. He has also been actively involved in each of the communities in which he has lived, including serving in the McKinney Rotary Club, McKinney Chamber of Commerce, and the First United Methodist Church of McKinney.
He and his wife Nancy celebrated 50 years of marriage in 2007. They are the proud parents of four and they have eight grandchildren. Dr. Cockrill has consulted for the past eight years and he and his wife Nancy now reside in Kerville, Texas.
