Amber Joy Milbrod fractured her leg and went to Parkland to receive services. After 19 hours in the waiting room, she gave up and went home. Two weeks later Milbrod received a bill. Apparently she spent a few minutes with a triage nurse, which is what the charges are for. (I wish I could get paid $162 to tell someone to sit down until their name is called.) The long wait at Parkland has been in the public view lately after Dallas restaurateur Mike Herrera passed away last month. Herrera went into cardiac arrest after a 19 hour wait. Obviously if you need emergency services, unless you are actually bleeding to death maybe taking a little extra time to drive to a different hospital is worth it. I would spend an extra 20 minutes driving somewhere to avoid a 19 hour wait.
UPDATE: Turns out Parkland has a heart after all (or they could write off the $162, or they're tired of all the bad publicity). In any case, Parkland has decided not to charge Milbrod for her non-visit. They've also changed hospital policy so that any patient who finds themselves in a similar situation will not be charged in the future.

Of course, she didn't need emergency services, as evidenced by the fact that she's doing OK without any. I'm sure she can go to any number of places, without much of a wait, if she's willing to pay for it.
