North Texas private school volleyball teams join together for charity
On October 9, 2008, two Catholic high schools were brought together in competition and service at John Paul II High School. John Paul II High School of Plano and Bishop Lynch of Dallas volleyball teams fought for “kills” on the court for their respective teams, but ultimately the wins were given greater purpose. The combined number of kills was 75 and resulted in over $2,000 in contributions. These donations will go to the American Heart Association to assist in research, education, and awareness building activities. The "Hit for Heart" event was a success for all.
The “Hit for Heart” fundraising idea originated from this year’s overall JPII Lady Cardinal’s “One Team, One Heart” theme. The event was planned early in the season in connection with the Lady Cardinal’s team motto.
Appropriately, these young lady athletes exhibited leadership and heart as they helped launch a specific initiative directed towards women called "Go Red for Women". The Lady Cardinals, already proudly displaying "their team Red" took it a step further and made the gym a festive environment for the event. A large scoreboard was placed on the wall and displayed points based on the number of kills (combined number for both teams) that were scored that evening. The banner was an exciting backdrop for the evening, and the raffled gift items added to the celebratory atmosphere.
Another measure of this successful evening was the combined spirit and goodwill exemplified in the athletes. It was a fitting theme for the game since Bishop Lynch and John Paul II High School are big rivals. Rivals or not - they came together for a common goal, making for a very special night.
