DFW Football Follow Up: Fitzgerald sets school record for UNT

UNT

University of North Texas receiver Casey Fitzgerald completed his "rags to riches" story Saturday night becoming the school's "all-time receptions leader" in spite of the Mean Green's 45-17 loss to the Troy Trojans at Fouts Field in Denton, TX. The loss leaves UNT winless on the year, but UNT will try again next week as they travel to Bowling Green, KY to take on Western Kentucky.

Fitzgerald, who began his career as a walk-on for UNT, caught 14 passes for 113 yards giving him 188 receptions in his career moving him in to the lead for career receptions at North Texas. He also moved in to fifth in career receiving touchdowns and receiving yards.

Cam Montgomery led the Mean Green in rushing carrying the ball 16 times for 93 yards while quarterback Giovanni Vizza was 31 of 52 passing for 246 yards with three interceptions and three sacks.

SMU

The Southern Methodist University Mustangs suffered another loss on the year in Annapolis, MD losing 34-7 to the Naval Academy. Navy third string quarterback Ricky Dobbs ran the ball 42 times for 224 yards and four touchdowns. The Midshipmen piled up a total 404 yards rushing on 77 carries without attempting a single pass against SMU. Navy held the ball for a staggering 42 minutes and 32 seconds and converted 72 percent of their third down conversions to keep the SMU "run and shoot" offense on the sidelines.

Mustang receiver Aldrick Robinson caught a four yard touchdown pass from SMU quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell late in the third quarter. Robinson finished the day with seven catches for 94 yards while Mitchell 16 of 28 for 157 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

The loss drops SMU to 1-8 on the seasons. The Mustangs will return to action on November 8 for homecoming against the University of Memphis Tigers at Gerald Ford Stadium in Dallas.

TCU

After their rout of Wyoming Saturday night, the TCU Horned Frogs have moved up to number 12 in both the AP and USA Today college football polls. The Frogs haven't been ranked this high since the final polls of 2005 when the then 11-1 Frogs were ranked number 9 in the USA Today Top 25 and number 11 in the Associated Press Top 25. TCU is 8-1 for the fifth time in the last nine seasons. On each occasion, the Frogs finished the year with at least 10 wins.

Todd Spigener, says:

Fitzgerald's record wasn't the only record set for UNT last night. Because of last night's loss, this season has had the <a href="http://www.dentonrc.com/sharedcontent/dws/spt/colleges/northtexas/stories/DRC_UNTFootball_1026.14c4845b2.html">"worst start"</a> in the history of the university.

Maybe I shouldn't be so negative.

Todd Jones, says:

It's hard not to be negative. I really don't know what to tell North Texas fans. When I watched them play Florida International, they looked slow compared to FIU. The need more team speed, and they need to recruit some talent for the lines. No system works unless you can win the line of scrimmage.
