New Music Weekly, both a print and online magazine, is geared towards music as an industry, as opposed to your more basic music gossip magazines. Focusing in four broad categories, Top 40, AC/Hot AC, Country, and College, NMW hosts a yearly awards program highlighting a number of artists, bands, and other industry professionals in those genres.
This year two local groups have been nominated. Darren Kozelsky, a country artist from Dallas, has been nominated Breakthrough Artist in the country category. He is up against Phil Stacey, Kim McAbee, Mickey Utley, Trinity Lane, Vince Hatfield, Christine Van Hoy for the honor. In the College category for Band of the Year is the Old 97's, a locally and nationally known alt-country band from Dallas. They are up against Thieves and Liars, A Plea for Purging, Wood Brothers, and Farehaven. Unfortunately, Max Cady Band, up for Best New Group in the AC/Hot AC category, is not our own Max Cady.
With online voting available, the award show takes place on November 22 at the Avalon Hollywood. Another local band, Blue October, took home NMW's Best New Top40 Group/Duo honors in 2006.
