September 5-7
- This one is on Thursday, the 4th. The Dallas Portfolio Exchange #7 is opening at the Magnolia. For this exhibition, 12 photographers printed one image 13 times and traded their work, with the 13th print framed and hanging up in the exhibit. I think this is really interesting because you get to see what an artists selects to give to their colleagues, and I imagine most of them would be putting their best foot forward with this one.
- In Fort Worth, Arts Fifth Avenue has events going on all weekend, with a Gallery Night on Friday and an Arts Goggle on Saturday, featuring new works by Texas Artists and performances at the opening. Also in Fort Worth, William Campbell is opening their Robert McAn show and the Fort Worth Community Arts Center is having an art show and sale.
- If you're looking to gallery hop, there are numerous openings on (and just off) Dragon Street. Pan American is opening the Ronald Moran show (should be a goodie), Holly Johnson is opening Phenomorama, paintings by Jackie Tileston, HCG is having an opening for their show featuring works by San Antonio artist George Schroeder, PDNB is opening their Jeffrey Silverthorne exhibit and Conduit is is opening their exhibit featuring various artists. The Cameron Gallery (new to Dragon Street) is having an encore of their Saved By Rock-and-Roll exhibit after a wonderful response to the show.
- In the Bishop Arts District, Decorazon is having a reception for Shine + Burn and in the alley on Bishop between 7th and 8th (between Soda Gallery and Artisan's Collective) is the Art and Garbage event, supporting Dallas sanitation workers.
- The MAC is also opening a show for multiple artists displaying works of "deep intellectual and emotional content." So try not to have one too many glasses of wine and get emotional over the art, okay? Unless you will promptly buy a piece and support the artists. Then you can get as emotional as you want.
September 12-14
- It's the DADA Fall Gallery Walk weekend! The festivities take place on Saturday, roughly from 10 am - 8 pm. All the DADA galleries should be open, and many of them are hosting opening receptions as well. Here's the map. A few highlights: The Latino Cultural Center is opening a show, as is Thornwood Gallery. There will be an art appraisal workshop at Heritage Auction Galleries in conjunction with the walk, and there will be singers from the Dallas Opera at the MAC at 2:00 and at the MADI at 3:00.
- After you finish at the DADA walk, head out to Deep Ellum for their Fall Art Walk (yes, they did that on purpose). A goodie to check out will be the Allison V. Smith show at Barry Whistler. The DEEP Walk is a ton of fun, from what I remember from the last one I went to.
- On Sunday there is a film at the Kimbell that looks interesting telling the story of the Impressionist movement, showing in conjunction of course with their current Impressionist exhibit.
September 19-21
- The creators of ReadyMade Magazine are coming to the DMA! If you've never picked up a ReadyMade, oh boy you are missing out. It's kind of like a DIY magazine, but for the artsy yet green minded types. They will be discussing creative ways to reuse materials. There is also a workshop where you get to do some hands on stuff. Registration required, so get on top of that!
- A new gallery is opening up in the Dragon Street neighborhood. Samuel Lynne Galleries opens up on Friday with a grand opening exhibit, so drop by over the weekend and welcome them to the neighborhood.
- The CADD Art Lab is opening on Saturday, with an artist talk at 2:00 and a reception and tours throughout the day.
- mighty fine arts is opening a solo exhibit for Rosemary Meza-Desplas.
September 26-28
- There is a Signature Illustration art auction at Heritage, which is interesting because it will feature works by the likes of Norman Rockwell, J. C. Leyendecker, Gil Elvgren, Maxfield Parrish, and Alberto Vargas. (Going once, going twice, sold to the lady that really wants it)
- Reflection Fine Art continues with its Friday Night Gallery Series.
- The Kimbell is showing another film in the current series going along with their Impressionist exhibit. This one chronicles the life of Toulouse-Lautrec and the Montmartre. Now there's an interesting character. This inbred (no seriously, he was inbred and had short legs because of it) artist became known for the posters he designed for the Moulin Rouge and would spend weeks at a time in brothels, although according to his Wikipedia entry he made up for his small stature in other areas. (Yes, I am juvenile. It's part of my charm.)
On Goings and Goings On
- The Women's Museum has an exhibit going on from Sept 1-14 benefiting the Bridge Breast Network. So go see it, and that's an order.
- The Modern in Fort Worth has a great exhibit running through October by Kara Walker. The exhibit is a room-sized tableaux of paper cut silhouettes depicting a historical narrative of life in the pre-Civil War South. It's definitely worth the drive out there.
- The State Fair starts September 26! So I'm gonna tell you to pay attention to all the artsy fartsy stuff, but I know you're not going to listen to me and b-line it for the closest stand of fried things-that-shouldn't-be-fried. Just don't touch any artwork after eating a piece of fried bacon.
