Dallas-area Starbucks to get new “healthy” breakfast items starting Wednesday Sept. 3

6

Starbucks' new menu of "healthy" breakfast items will debut in Dallas-area stores on Wednesday September 3. The full menu includes oatmeal, apple-bran muffin, multigrain roll, energy bar, "power protein plate", and a fruit pastry. However, not all Dallas-area stores will have all items. Most are expected to stock the following:

  • Oatmeal. Served in a cardboard to-go bowl with choice of three flavor toppings: dried fruit, nuts, or brown sugar, for $2.45.
  • Apple-bran muffin. Made with whole-wheat flour, oats, wheat bran, apples, cherries, and honey, for $1.75, to replace bran muffin.
  • Chewy Fruit & Nut energy bar. Made with oats, dried fruit, nuts, seeds, and honey, also $1.75.

Employees surveyed at Dallas-area stores said that, aside from the oatmeal, they didn't know yet what they'd be getting on Wednesday morning, but no one seems to be getting the $4.95 "Power Protein Plate", with a hard-boiled egg (from uncaged hens), whole-wheat bagel, peanut butter, cheddar cheese, apples, and grapes. According to Starbucks, this item will be sold only at stores with cold cases.

The Berry Stella, a whole-grain pastry made with seasonal fruits that resembles an open pie, began appearing in Starbucks stores last month.

Nutritional details on the list of items offered can be found here. Starbucks, which lost money for the first time ever since going public in 1992, is on a health kick: It launched a pair of protein smoothies that have been extremely popular since they were introduced in mid-July.

Do you know if they are they making the oatmeal there in batches, or is it instant? At least they're making the effort.

I'd be thrilled if Starbucks will merely start to sell FRESH bagels to have with coffee! Sheesh, their bagels are awful.

Someone explain why Starbucks needs to freeze and thaw their ALL their bagels? It's an enigma !

If the hens are uncaged, how are the hard-boiled eggs gathered -- with a rake?

The toughest thing is getting the uncaged hens to sit in the water long enough to get the eggs to hard boil.

The Starbucks Gossip site has some priceless comments regarding the new "healthy" breakie items.

My fave:

"I have to say that I don't really understand the big push behind high fiber products either. Are there that many people out there who are blocked up? I'm sorry, but I'm now reminded of a Saturday Night Live Fauxmercial from many years ago for a cereal high in fiber called "Colon Blow". It was hilarious. And all I have to say about the [Justin's] Nut Butter is: Poor Justin! OW!"
