Gay List Daily’s September theater recommendations

When trying to find the words to sum up September theatre, we were at a loss. So we turned to a 1987 Motley Crüe classic for some words of wisdom: “girls, girls, girls…long legs and burgundy lips…girls, girls, girls…red lips, fingertips.”

Yep, the stage lights burn bright with the lovely ladies this month with shows ranging from the slightly naughty to the ultra catty. And whether they’re peeling off clothes or spitting out insults, we plan to be front row for this “meeting in the ladies room.”

Puss in Go-Go Boots: Velvet Kitten Burlesque Review

Saturdays, September 6 & 20

With drag-queen names like Ginger Valentine and Mimi Rockafellar, it’s easy to assume the “girls” of Velvet Kittens might have some tisket and tasket up in their basket. But this Big D burlesque troupe is all bona fide females who know how to shimmy and shake without showing the moneymaker. So whatcha waitin’ for Big Spender, they can show you a good time.

ABBA Dabbadoo: Mamma Mia!

While the screen version of Mamma Mia works for the masses (except that scary singing Pierce Brosnan part), we know nothing can capture our inner “Dancing Queen” like a live stage production. As part of its 50th Summer Season, Casa Mañana is bringing the sing-along hit to North Texas faster than we can say “gimme, gimme, gimme a man after midnight.” (Well, okay, maybe not that fast.)

Pistol Packin’ Mama: Annie Get Your Gun

Mamas, do let your babies grow up to be cowgirls, but only if they’re the singing/dancing kind. And fair warning for anyone in attendance, you’ll be singing “Anything You Can Do” for weeks afterwards. Did we mention the September 18 show is BYOB? Yee Haw, we’re so there.

Female. Trouble.: The Women

September 19 – 28

Socialites. Gossip. Acid-tongued one-liners. Who knew that this 1930’s play would sound like a pitch for a modern day reality show? The movie version has silver screen starlets like Joan Crawford and Rosalind Russell, which make for some awfully large stilettos for the Dallas divas to fill. But we have all the confidence in the world in them. (And a roster of wicked insults should they fail us.)

La Bohemline: Internal Vanity: A Fashion Opera

Saturday & Sunday, September 20 & 21

Opera snobs, you’ll find no Marriage of Figaro here. It’s been replaced by a catwalk and the story of three sisters who rise to fortune, fame and fabulosity before taking a dark turn. Drama so thick, you cold eat it with a spoon. Delish.
