Woman shoots self then turns gun on Fort Worth police officers

Late Wednesday night, Fort Worth police officers approached a car with its lights off at Buck Sansom Park, located inside the northwest loop of 820. A woman behind the steering wheel looked distraught and after officers began asking her questions she pulled out a gun and shot herself in the head. But, the shot did not kill her and she pointed the gun at an officer, who then shot her twice in the chest.

It appeared that the woman, in her early 20's, was writing a suicide note when officers approached her car.

UPDATE: DMN reports that she was Sheena Bivens, a 23-year-old TCU student.

I'm still amazed every time I hear a story about someone shooting themselves in the head, and not only surviving, but retaining enough mental faculty to do more than breathe on their own.

No. She used a .22-caliber pistol.

DC, says:

The problem with these head shot situations seems to be poor planning and anatomy knowledge. Brainstem damage would appear to be more likely fatal than cortex, a la mob style. Of course, we could then debate how logical one is at the time of attempting to take their own life.

I think it was the choice in caliber that she choose. I can imagine the 22 bullet not even exiting her scull.

DC, says:

You're completely correct that a .22 calibre may not exit the skull but the ricochet from the inside of the skull can still cause significant damage. Calibre also doesn't tell you the whole story of the weapon:
