ARLINGTON — The Texas Rangers lost before a hostile home crowd Sunday night, losing 7-2 to the Boston Red Sox at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. The loss dropped the Rangers to 70-74 with a mere 18 games left in an up-and-down season for the young squad.

Boston doesn't seem to be burning money this season
Most of the 28,000 fans in attendance were Boston fans, owing as much to the Rangers' recent slide as it did to the fact that the game was unwisely scheduled opposite the Dallas Cowboys' season opener. After Boston pitcher Paul Byrd left after nearly seven scoreless innings, he received a standing ovation from the crowd.
Rangers starter Brandon McCarthy was not so fortunate. Although McCarthy had pitched brilliantly in his first few starts coming off the 60-day disabled list, on Sunday he gave up six runs in just over five innings of work, allowing seven hits and three walks while striking out just one. McCarthy's ERA rose from 2.25 to 4.22, and he fell to 1-1.
The Rangers offense was non-existent for most of the game, coming alive only in the bottom of the eighth when rookie catcher and Dallas native Taylor Teagarden hit a two-run shot to break the shutout. As a team, Texas collected just seven hits and four walks, and has been in a slide recently despite leading the major leagues.
