Vern’s Place in Dallas’ Deep Ellum district is now Vern’s Kitchen
DALLAS Vern's Place, the home-cooking place in Deep Ellum, has become Vern's Kitchen, with a new phone number to boot.
"It's because of a business decision," said a rather-reluctant spokesperson from the restaurant. "Vern's Place went out of business on June 30 and Vern's Kitchen is the new name. Vern's granddaughter is the owner.
"Vern is Vern. She still comes up here and makes sure everything's right. And we still have her cook. But she's here on a part-time basis."
(Thanks to acason for the early alert.)

Verns has sat on that corner intersection as a building since 1922, or maybe 1918, judging by an old photo that once hung over at the old gas station, on up that deep elm road, last year someone took off the last of the old Pepsi tins or painted over signs that had been on the front since the 1950s, leaving that oval round stain, while the old brick building that Verns has been in for many years was once an old cafe in the 1930s, so the building has a sort of spiritual reputation in the food business and taking care of the public, while what has hurt the area is the dutch ELM disease that has everyone on the skids, which is a decade problem, and that is why I am here again to say, if you can recall why we call it deep in the elm then it will stay and grown and remain,IF you forget about it, it will fade and just fall away ....look at it from the cool side, Verns is just needing some love and people to hug its southern home cooked meals until then Alexander Troup Historian and Artist.

Im at verns at least once a week, whats hurting them right now, as well a few other places(im looking at you, Kims Cafe!!) is the fact they're not opened in the evenings or on weekends. Once they get over that, they'll bring in more business.
