Private donors to (possibly) pave way for new Parkland Hospital

Officials from Parkland Memorial Hospital will announce today that two donors -- Annette and Harold Simmons and family, and the foundation of Jan and Trevor Rees-Jones -- will contribute a combined $75 million toward a new hospital. Both donations are contingent upon other factors, however, including the passage of a Dallas County bond issue in November that would ask taxpayers to pay $747 million toward the estimated $1.3 billion project.

I dunno -- their math seems a little fuzzy to me. If you add in the $100 million the Simmons Family wants Parkland to raise (the other contingency) and the almost $5 million other donors have given, that still only gives them around $927 million, well short of that $1.3 billion. Anybody got $400 million lying around?

Alex, I work for Parkland, and wanted to help fill in the financial blanks, so to speak. The one figure missing from your article is the $350 million that Parkland will contribute. The two gifts announced today are part of another $150 million that the Parkland Foundation has committed to raise through private philanthropic dollars.

In regard to the above photo, that was a concept that was never intended to be a final product. Parkland has never been as far along in the planning process as we are right now.

Private funding is great and all.. and I all about new development. But at what point do we say that Dallas County doesn't like growth north of I-30?!! I hope that Parkland gets a new and updated hospital.
