Dallas police say crime fell 18 percent after installing 40 surveillance cameras around downtown, so they plan on installing 40 more, mostly around the Dallas Arts District. Wiring for another 20 cameras is already in place along the Katy Trail, and Uptown is considering implementing some surveillance cameras after a woman was sexually assaulted on Sunday while walking back to her home from the Katy Trail.

Is there any evidence of a correlation? Have there been arrests made or convictions made in conjunction with camera footage?
Less reposting of articles from other sites and more REPORTING please!

Clay, I realize this is a regular complaint for you -- We do a lot of original reporting, but have to pick our shots on coverage of things that others aren't already on top of.
We have a small team and we're down a head right now, which means those shots are even more limited. That said, we do accept submissions from lots of folks who care about their towns and neighborhoods and take the initiative to follow up on their own.
Only other way to swing the balance is to tell the businesses you patronize that you read the site and that their advertising would reach more like you. More $ = more staff reporters...

Clay - if I pissed you off about this, you'd have that data in about 30 milliseconds. I know you.
Anybody seen a counter to this study in Britain several years back that says cameras do nothing to reduce crime?

According to the article that we linked to, "The cameras have caught on tape incidents such a robbery and the takedown of a man wanted for sexually assaulting a child."

That doesn't answer either of the questions.

All the more reason those questions should have been asked and answered already.. either by this article or the one they are linking to.

Laura: Great! But it didn't really link videotaping a crime and preventing it.
It seems obvious that criminals will avoid committing crimes in front of cameras, and it's easy to link the drop in crime to that, but sometimes things are counter-intuitive.
I'm too lazy to do any research, obviously. Clay, I vote you get on it while I support you from the sidelines.

I think it's fairly obvious there is no link. London is an excellent example. If CCTV had any effect on reducing crime, London would be crime free. There isn't a square foot of that city that doesn't have some camera gazing upon it.
But it's not. They have a terrible problem with crime. These cameras are a waste of time and money. Instead of having a cop sitting in front of a computer monitor looking down women's tops-- get them out on the beat.

From what I just read... Dallas Police Department looks at data on a dynamically daily basis. So this is pointless. lets see how good it is a year from now. Sept 12 post in the Dallas Morning news says that the cameras were not even up yet and they didn't know where they were going. They also said that they are red light cameras and not public surveillance cameras. quoted from DMN "Locations for the 40 new cameras haven’t yet been determined, Assistant Public Works and Transportation Director Zaida Basora said. And it may be several months before any of them are operational, Assistant City Manager Ramon Miguez added. " does that mean that they took stats before they were put up? but giving credit to the cameras? I am confused. How many dummy cameras are they putting up? they say they did but not how many. lets see, that’s a contract for 27million dollars for the next 7 years. that’s 4.157 million a year. with lets say we use the 100 cameras that the city of Dallas is boasting about inventory. that’s $41570 per camera including installation and maintenance I would hope.. How many of those 41 thousand dollar cameras are the dummy cameras they are talking about. Taxpayers are getting a great deal on those I'll tell ya. Dallas is selling you cameras and padding it with false stats. I am impressed at Dallas Citizens. They just pay taxes and don’t question anything.
