UPDATED: Seagoville student forbidden from wearing rosary; DISD reverses decision
Tabitha Ruiz, a student at Seagoville High School, has been forbidden to wear her rosary to school on the grounds that it's a gang symbol. Officially the decision is up to the principal, however, Tabitha's mother says she's willing to take this issue to court. While it's generally accepted that student's leave their freedom of speech at the door, freedom of religion is a completely different story in this country.
UPDATE: Dallas ISD has now decided that all students will be allowed to wear rosaries to school. According to a gang unit officer, just because a student wears a rosary, which has been identified as a gang symbol, doesn't mean the student is in a gang. There's a shocker.

We were never permitted to wear our rosaries as a necklace. It was considered sacrilegious.
According to The Roman Catholic Church - "Sacred objects, set aside for divine worship by dedication or blessing, are to be treated with reverence. They are not to be made over to secular or inappropriate use, even though they may belong to private persons"
Problem solved. And by the Vatican even!

I'm pretty sure most prisoners are allowed to wear rosaries.

Btw, that dude just carried them in his pocket...willing to bet they don't throw fits if he's got it around his neck either.
Not exactly sure where they get off allowing peeps material that could be used to strangle other inmates or even guards...but hey, why bother with common sense - it's for Jesus!

Didn’t you know that the Catholic Church is one of the largest gangs in the world? They have been in more wars than the crypts and the bloods put together. They could teach these local gangs a thing or two. But really are we going to be told what we can and can not wear by out government and city officials? I saw a gang member wearing a pair of pants and a tank top the other day. Oh wait that’s what I got on… I must be a gang member. Ohhh the irony. How much longer are people going to take this kind of stuff

The baggy trousers issue would make me a hypocrite. I think it’s wrong to show your bottom in public like that. But…. If it’s a mating ritual thing, I can understand that. I am old now but when I was young and we probably had what our parents thought was strange attire.

Yes, but we are talking about teenagers in school here. I think it has already been established that they don't have the same rights afforded the rest of us. I'm kind of ok with that.
The things the church has done in the name Jesus and all the Saints would make those small timers crap their baggy britches. But then the Protestants really aren’t all that sweet either.
If I understand the “suggestion” correctly, it is only considered appropriate to wear the rosary around your wrist or attached to your belt or in a pouch or pocket and only to be seen by others when you are using it in prayer. Wearing it as a necklace would be considered disrespectful (Madonna)- Unless you're a nun or a saint.
You couldn’t really strangle anyone with your standard rosary. They are generally not that durable.
Note to self: Special order a rosary made of rope so I can strangle anyone who tries to take it from me.

So why don't we have school uniforms in public schools? I am sure the DISD would love that idea if they could find a way to skim money out of it :)

Guess I fail to see how a necklace is unholy, lacking religion, disgraceful, or whatever else you want to throw out there. Around your god-given neck rather than in the pocket of your threads seems more appropriate, imo. That way Jesus could never leave your person unless you cast him away or he was stripped from you against your will.
Nut jobs, I tells ya.

Oh those wacky Catholics are all about their sacraments and rituals. Which, imo, adds a certain beauty to the religion. Reverence is really a non-issue for me. I have much bigger bones to pick with the Pope, like declaring birth control as “intrinsically wrong”.

my favorite pope moment was seeing him decked out in the full regailia, gigantic hat and gold chains in full effect, telling people to shun materialism and greed.

Hey gang, sorry I'm late. I've been busy keying all the church buses and vans I see.
Yes Jason, I could go on for hours and hours talking about the hypocrisy of the pope, the corruption of the church, and the benefits of a non-religious life. But after twenty or thirty posts, I'd start sounding like Bill Betzel. That's not good.
