Cities all around Dallas will celebrate “Technology Day” on September 26

0

The Metroplex Technology Business Council (MTBC), the largest technology trade association in Texas, has joined 13 North Texas cities and the North Texas Commission in proclaiming September 26 "Technology Day." The proclamation acknowledges and celebrates the importance of technology to the region's economic prosperity, quality of life, and security.

Cities observing "Technology Day" include Addison, Allen, Bridgeport, Coppell, Dallas, Denton, Farmers Branch, Fort Worth, Frisco, Garland, Irving, Plano, and Richardson.

"Technology Day" coincides with the MTBC's 8th Annual Tech Titans and Fast 50 Awards gala event, which recognizes outstanding information technology companies and individuals in the North Texas area who have made contributions during the past year locally, as well as to the technology industry overall.

North Texas is one of the leading centers for technology business and innovation both in the U.S. and globally. The AeA (American Electronics Association) recently ranked the Dallas-Fort Worth area fifth among U.S. cities in high-tech employment, with approximately 176,000 high-tech workers. In addition, the Dallas-Fort Worth area ranked second nationwide for employment in both the telecommunications services and internet services sectors, and the region is also home to one-half of Texas' technology workforce.

DFW and surrounding communities have given rise to such revolutionary technological breakthroughs as:

· The integrated circuit, invented by Jack Kilby of Texas Instruments in 1958.

· The automated teller machine (ATM), invented by Don Wetzel of Docutel in 1968.

· Voice mail, invented by Gordon Matthews of VMX in 1979.

"Widespread support of 'Technology Day' means that people and businesses all over North Texas will celebrate the increasingly important role that scientific innovation plays in our busy, everyday lives," said Bill Sproull, president and CEO of the MTBC. "Our region has a rich technological heritage and, as a region, we must develop the resources and talent that will keep us on the cutting edge in terms of our economy and quality of life."

The Tech Titans gala takes place the evening of September 26, 2008, at the Marriott Legacy Town Center in Plano, Texas. More information about the event is available at the Web site.
