— The next time you go for a hike along the wooded nature trail south of Towne Lake in McKinney, take a good look at the new stretch of cedar boardwalk. Thanks to Trevor Kitt and the Scouts of McKinney Troop 496, your shoes will stay drier and cleaner. Trevor, a 15-year-old student in grade 10, led his troop in constructing the boardwalk on the Sept. 20 weekend as his Eagle project.

The ambitious project involved digging 12 post holes, mixing and pouring cement for the posts, repositioning an existing ramp, building the walkway framework and laying down 21 feet of new cedar planking. The new stretch of boardwalk joins together two previously existing pieces. Over the weekend a total of 15 Scouts were involved in the project.

In generous support of the Boy Scouts, all the cedar was donated by Cedar Supply Company of Carrolton, the cement was donated by Tony Webb of Southern Star Company and the screws by Monty Henry.

While the boys worked over the weekend, they were encouraged to see many walkers and runners, often accompanied by children and dogs, enjoying the nature trail.

The Eagle Project is Trevor’s last step in completing the many requirements to attain his rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank in American Scouting. Trevor’s family moved here from Canada last August for a work assignment for his dad, a systems engineer. Just before moving to McKinney Trevor had received his Chief Scout award, Canada’s highest Scouting award. After joining McKinney troop 496, his achievements in Canada were recognized by the Boy Scouts of America and he was awarded the Life Rank. He’s hoping to become an Eagle Scout before the family has to move back home to Canada in November.

In true Boy Scout spirit, the footprint Trevor will leave behind him in McKinney is one of service to his community.

Way to go Boy Scouts! Always great to hear of kids giving to their community. I hope Trevor gets to Eagle Scout and continues doing this kind of stuff wherever he goes.
