— Longtime downtown building renovator Don Day publically announced his bid for McKinney’s District 1 City Council seat at the City’s Planning and Zoning Commission meeting Tuesday night.

The 68-year-old Day, whose term as a member of the Planning and Zoning Commission expired Tuesday, has renovated and resold multiple downtown properties since arriving in McKinney in 1996.

"There are things on the East side of McKinney that need to be addressed," Day told McKinneyNews.net Wednesday evening. "I’m talking about infrastructure - there are water pipes on that side of town made out of lead and streets that need improving."

Day, citing the need for stimulating economic growth, also said he’d like to see more retail and food service establishments making their way downtown.

"I’ve served on eight city boards," Day said. "You’ve got to know how to work with people. It takes four city council votes to get anything done."

The District 1 seat currently belongs to Gilda Garza who will be leaving office next year.
