César Chávez street signs not forthcoming for Ross Ave., says Dallas Plan Commission

... but Industrial Boulevard is still a possibility.

This might or might not be one of the powerful members of the Dallas Plan Commission wielding some of his enormous power. (It's a picture I found at random on the internet.)

The results of a Thurs., Sept. 25 meeting of the Dallas Plan Commission were close - by a difference of one vote, the "powerful" (it says here) commission denied a request to change the name of Ross Avenue to César Chávez (Avenue? Street? Doesn't matter at this stage, I guess.)

However, amid the expected charges of racism (both from the assembled Chávez backers and District 14 commissioner Neil Emmons), the "powerful" commission deigned to accept an application to rebrand Industrial Boulevard after Chávez.

But of course the "powerful" Plan Commission doesn't have the final say on the matter: Dallas City Council does. If 11 members of that dang nigh omnipotent outfit vote to rename Ross to Chávez, then it's a done deal. (Although the murmurings coming from Council are leaning in the "not renaming Ross" direction.)

Oh, the humanity.

So here is the invitation to start yet another discussion with Bill about the changing of street names. Unless the number of other local news sites I see him at are more entertaining. So what I read this morning is that it's going to be industrial that get's it.

Well, what you should have read is that this commission has relatively little say in the matter even after voting b/c the Dallas City Council is gonna do what they want. I'm fairly sure that applies to Industrial just the same.

JM, is that a picture of Don "Mr. Wizard" Herbert?

Getting on the street naming business: The DPC did the right thing. They took into consideration the public at larges feelings on the issue and sided with the business owners on ross.

I think we should eliminate vowels from street names entirely or put accents over all of them so everyone feels more cosmopolitan and more included. I also like the idea of adding three or four more names to John Carpenter Freeway. One of them ought to be "Spike".

chrisd.: dang, you're too clever for me. That is, indeed, Mr. Wizard. But who's to say he's not influencing events on the DPC from beyond the grave? (Using purely scientific methods, I mean.)

Don Herbet does travel the etherial plane like a newtonian-esque Dr. Strange. I think he prolly appeared in a plume of smoke or etherial energy, made the case by giving a visual lesson on chain reaction of this decision using ping-pong balls and mousetraps, then dissappeared accordingly.

Ross oh Ross, my old Ross avenue, i miss my little old ross......and it is said from the lips Of Mr Jim Reyna, who is of Hispanic orgin and whos family came to Dallas around 1918 and settled in East Dallas, jimmy as he was called in World War 2 and a golden gloves boxer in the army tells me the intresting events and visual memories he has of Ross avenue as an amercian ....why do they have to tear everything up, Troup, I can recall when Sears had the first escelator in the building in 1939, and we would ride the street car to get there so we could go up it, and we would get hot dogs and cold meats at the Itilians, Marinos somthing who ran a mom and pop store on Ross and Prarie st, I grew up on the steps of Ross because that was everyones Bario, back then...and it is a shame they will change it to someone I admire, but I dont think he lived on Ross like i did...... interview with James Reyna, August 30/2008, and so what should old Ross do, leave me and my bones alone we hope...., until then Alexander Troup Historian.
