The deadline for Texas' Hunting Art Prize is coming up November 30. The coolest thing about this contest is the prize money: $50,000 smackers. It's one of the largest art prizes in the country. If you think the prize is beyond your grasp, don't forget the 2007 award went to Carrollton native Michael Tole. I think it's time for North Texas to represent once again. The complete rules and details are on their site, but here are some of the bigger things to keep in mind:

  • The contest is limited to 2-dimensional paintings and drawings only. Sorry, but no photography, sculpture, collages, etc. This is a plain Jane contest.
  • When I say "plain Jane" I really mean it. "Any artwork that includes the use of bodily fluids, degradation of religion or government, and/or depiction of sexual acts or any other medium, presentation or topic objectionable to Hunting PLC will be automatically disqualified." So no spitting, bleeding or defecating on your work people. Keep it to paint and ink, and keep the subject matter relatively unoffensive or you will get disqualified. Ooh, SNAP!
  • You must be a legal resident of Texas. Pschh! Sorry New Yorkers, this is one prize you cannot win.
  • The work you submit has to have been completed within three years prior to the deadline.
  • Here's how the contest works: You must submit a digital image of your work to be judged by the first Jury. The finalists will then submit their work to be judged by a second Jury. The winner will be announced May 2 at the gala thing.

Lastly, keep in mind you won't win that prize if you don't enter the contest, so get on top of it. Best of luck!
