Chef at Cowboy Chow in Dallas’ Deep Ellum district in hospital after getting hit on his Vespa
DALLAS Jason Boso, chef-owner of Twisted Root Burger and Cowboy Chow, is in the hospital after getting hit on his Vespa by a Hummer, reports Nancy N. at FrontBurner. He's been in the hospital for three weeks and is in and out of ICU. A friend of Boso's is asking fans to show their support by dining at Twisted Root or Cowboy Chow over the next few days.

That's what he gets for riding a Vespa...

I had lunch at CC today and they have some paper set aside at the bar where you can leave Jason a note.
I wish Travis had been standing between Jason and the hummer.

Have you ever driven a motorcycle on the streets of Dallas? Between the idiots talking on their phones and otherwise not paying attention, it is a dangerous thing to do. Now, just imagine driving something even smaller, with a very small headlight and making practically no noise at all. You are a lot more likely to get injured driving one of those things. I'm sorry he got injured, but you buy your ticket and you take your ride.

Vespas make quite a bit of noise and I'm not quite sure how the ignorance of car drivers translates into "that's what he gets for riding a Vespa".
The more accurate statement would have been "jail is what the Hummer drivers gets for hitting someone".
Put down your bong.

Yes, I have driven a motorcycle in Dallas, and yes, there are lots of idiots not paying attention. Anyone that gets on any two-wheeled vehicle is definitely at greater risk for injury.
Sometimes, however, accidents do happen. I agree that it's the risk you run, but to imply "that's what he gets" for simply riding puts you in the same class as the rest of the idiots.

i personally will have no trouble fulfilling the request of jason boso's friend and dining at cowboy chow this week, becuz i love the place. food's fantastic, it's a beautiful renovation, and a fun, sassy staff. and it's relatively cheap, too. if i lived closer, i'd eat there every damn day

As both a fan of Twisted Root and Chow, Its pretty dang sad to hear a typical, self-righteous Dallas a$$hat ran down Jason. I hope and pray he makes a speedy recovery, as well as catching the guy or dumb broad who hit him...

OK, I should have phrased my words differently. Get your panties out of a wad and stop with the QQ already. I just don't think they are safe to drive in a place like Dallas. As well, I have seen very few people who ride them wear appropriate head gear or clothing. It really doesn't instill much sympathy. You can make your personal attacks all you want, but go to any biker bar in Dallas and ask bikers if they think Vespas are safe to operate on Dallas roads. You already know what the answer will be.

I'm confused. Are motorcycles supposedly more safe than Vespas on city streets? Cause that's some bongwater logic right there.

it shouldn't really matter Travis. People have a right to expect to not be run over by some chick yapping into her cell while cutting across 3 lanes of traffic in a Hummer.

Of course people have a right not to be run over. That is why I was overjoyed when the city put the "no cell phone" signs up in school zones. It seems you have to beat people over the head to get them to drive friendly.
As to whether or not motorcycles are safer, I can tell you that bigger and louder is better. Motorcycles also sit slightly higher, which gives you more of a chance to be seen, especially at night and to say that you can actually hear a Vespa coming, is slightly ridiculous BTW.
I am in full agreement that huge vehicles are a danger to all drivers and I would prefer they not be on the road with me. Most people don't even buy them for their intended use and this just compounds the problem. You add very small vehicles into the mix (ones that you might not be able to see for a variety of reasons) and it leads to accidents.
Oh and I find it funny that some of you didn't even bother looking at my avatar. You assumed it was a bong or something. It is a piece of wood that I found at Cedar Hill State Park and although it might bear a resemblance, you should look again and stop right there.

Anyway, my point isn't whether or not motorcycles are safer than scooters, which I agree with you they are. Just that the tone and delivery of your initial comment seemed a little misplaced for a this particular story.

They are no more or less safe IMO. Vespas are louder than my Camry by a longshot. They both have headlights and blinkers and both can do 65+ mph so to imply that they are inherently less safe seems like a shallow argument at best.
Either way, these people don't deserve to be run over by anyone, regardless of what they are riding.

Yall need to get off Travis' a$$. Although I agree a person should be able to drive the streets in/on any legal vehicle without being mangled, you certainly do take a risk taking anything lesser than a '68 Ford Galaxy out on the streets of this city.
In Dallas, driving friendly means, "I'm special, on my way to somewhere special, screw you- get outta my way!" Taken in a way that's not so personal, (i.e. not specific to this accident victim) you do take your chances riding a small vehicle like a Vespa. I agree with Travis.

And noise has little to do with it- I have my stereo cranked most of the time. I crank it louder when there's a Harley nearby- I hate that loud exhaust,"look at me" noise. It has more to do with size and weight.

ugh! Kind of like people driving recklessly in expensive cars. It may seem to them that because they have an expensive vehicle, the car is immune to being in an accident. Or maybe when you have that kind of a car you have really good insurance and just don't care.
I should have said, Vespas are dangerous and left it at that. I really didn't mean for it to be a personal comment about the guy involved in the accident, and I can see how it could be construed as otherwise, especially by his friends and patrons. Seeing there is no edit function, I can't change that , but I would gladly do so.

Vespas are not dangerous; unskilled and overly aggressive drivers are.
And yes, I commute on a motorcycle every day.

Here Here Frat, most people I know who own vespas and other two-wheeled transport (motorized or not) are a heck of alot more responsible than most of the drivers in this city when it comes to obeying traffic laws.

Boso is a friend of mine and is fighting for his life in the hospital. It's easy to throw around comments and opinions, but please remember this is a person with family and friends who are hurting and very scared right now.

So...I presume they caught the driver of the Hummer? Maybe that's what caused <a href="http://www.pegasusnews.com/news/2008/sep/17/gray-haired-southlake-vigilante-hummer-keying-ramp/">this keying</a>?
Will mos def have to stop by Twisted Root sometime soon and indulge for the cause.

The accident was not a hit and run, so we know who the driver was. DPD made an accident report, etc.
As the accident occurred in downtown Dallas, and the Southlake keyings have been going on for a while (according to the linked article), we should not presume they are related.

Ease up, chief - keying bit was a lark.
Is the pretentious driver being charged with anything? I presume running over people on bikes isn't just an "oopsie!" kinda thing.

I've followed this thread for a few days now, and can no longer take it.
The type of vehicle makes zero difference in this case. The wealth of the driver makes zero difference in this case, at least regarding the cause of this incident. This is not a socio-economic issue. Fact is, this was an accident. Plain and simple. Nobody, including the driver, wanted this to happen, and I'm certain the driver feels completely horrible. Very few can fathom the guilt he is likely feeling.
TravisRex, I'm glad to see you recant your original statement because you sounded like a complete turd, and so did anyone defending your position. If your comments were made in a general discussion about this type of incident, then you would have been taken more seriously. As it is, your comments were very inflammatory and hurtful to those who care greatly about Jason. Again, I'm glad to see you backed off and realized the sensativities involved.
The last update I got on Jason was the most encouraging update in a couple weeks. Hopefully he will continue making progress. I'm sure he will be extremely touched by the outpouring of thoughts and prayers from so many people. I can't wait for him to get to a point where he can realize the level of support he's receiving. Rant over.

Rone, people have been known to get slapped with charges regardless of intent. Manslaughter, etc. Simple question.

Manslaughter implies death of the victim. Let's hope and pray that's not ever a consideration. And the legal aspect is not in question. I don't know if the guy has been charged, will be charged, or deserves to be charged with anything. My point focuses specifically on the fact that this was an accident, void of any current or future legal possibilities.

I hope he gets better and I hope, as his friend, you will bug the crap out of him to wear his helmet and at least some protective clothing. Riders forget sometimes and it can make all the difference when you do have an accident.

Rone, severe injuries resulting from car accidents in which the injured party didn't die have led to charges just the same.
Again, just a question.
Sure, accidents happen...but does that mean we ignore the factors leading to them and go about our business? Methinks it's a pretty steadfast fact that Dallas drivers don't watch for peeps on 2 wheels.
