Sarah Palin Dallas visit to be the focus of protest

109

Republican vice presidential candidate Gov. Sarah Palin leaves her hotel for a meeting with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, Tuesday, Sept. 23, in New York.

Republican vice presidential candidate Gov. Sarah Palin leaves her hotel for a meeting with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, Tuesday, Sept. 23, in New York.

It looks like there is going to be a Texas-sized crowd gathered outside the Fairmont Hotel to greet Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin on Friday, Oct. 3. But it isn’t likely to be a friendly welcome.

Palin will be at the Fairmont for a $1,000-a-plate fundraising luncheon on Friday, the day after the first debate between her and Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden. Activist Dawn Meifert said this week she is expecting between 200 and 300 people to participate in the protest she has planned for the Alaska governor’s visit.

But, Meifert added, the crowd could be much larger.

“How many are going to be there? I wish I knew. I am guessing 200-300. But when I said that to a friend of mine, he laughed and said we have unleashed something much bigger than we realize,” Meifert said.

“My friend said there could be 700-800 people there. I don’t know about that, but it’s just gone to so many places that we didn’t expect. We are getting tremendous response. I think it’s definitely going to be lively.”

Meifert said the response from such a wide variety of people has been “an enlightening thing for me.”

“We have had so many straight individuals reach out to us when they hear about the protest,” she said. “There was the 40-ish straight soccer mom who said Sarah Palin says nothing about her values and her life. There have been a lot of straight Jewish women who have gotten their synagogues involved. We’ve gotten response from several animal rescue groups, from Planned Parenthood and, of course, from Stonewall Democrats. It feels really good.”

The protest will begin about 11 a.m. on the sidewalk across the street from the Fairmont Hotel in downtown Dallas. Meifert said she wants protesters to be there when people start arriving to attend the V.I.P. reception with Palin that starts at 11:30 a.m.

She warned those who want to participate to be mindful of the fact that traffic is likely to be heavy in the area, especially given the extra security precautions that will be in place for Palin’s visit, and to plan accordingly. She also asked those attending to bring their own signs for the event.

“Again, we are asking that people focus on two main issues: LGBT equal rights and women’s reproductive rights,” Meifert said.

She added that volunteers will be posted along the sidewalk where the protest is taking place to make sure that “people keep moving” to avoid citations for loitering.

Meifert said she organized the protest as much to “get the attention of the people who might support” Palin financially as to send a message to the candidate herself.

“We also want to get the attention of the media,” she said. “All the media is talking about how all the white women are supporting McCain now because he chose Sarah Palin as his running mate. Well, not the white women we know. We want to show the media and everybody else that isn’t true, not even in areas like Dallas that are traditionally considered to be conservative.”

For information, e-mail Meifert at meifert11@yahoo.com.

Maybe I missed something, but I'd appreciate elaboration on what specific LGBT rights we're talking about. Women's reproductive is obvious.

I'm guessing that after 8 years of GWB, the financial market collapse and other assorted apocalypse...that one will not need to sweat Sarah Palin's speech in Dallas (wanta bet it's the same speech she made at the convention?) On the day after she stands in for Tina Fey for 90 minutes 'debating' with Joe Biden. I'm betting this embryonic Alaskan supernova career will abort faster than a Frat House rape victim.

Remember my Pegasus piece... suggesting that, rather than the SMU Bush Presidential 'Library'...that Dallas instead invest in the Anna Nicole Smile Institute of Mindless Pursuit of Fame (or more current, famine) and Fortune? How prescient was that?

Did Tammye Nash ever take a journalism class? She does not tell us who Dawn Meifert is, other than to say she is an activist. The next hint is when Meifert says, “Again, we are asking that people focus on two main issues: LGBT equal rights and women’s reproductive rights.” What does LBGT stand for? "And she'll keep McCain's head out of the clouds and feet on the ground."

Only because he will be busy making sure she doesn't have any more disastrous interviews. Reagan sent GHWB to the funerals of more than one Russian politico and probably for good reason.

"She represents me. She represents my wife. She represents my friends. She represents about 50% of America."

You mean having pregnant teenage daughters, family feuds, calling the cops and CPS on your family even if they are the cops, having your dad process illegally poached animals, stuff like that? Sounds like 50% of America to me..heehaw!

Got this from a friend.

Instead of us all sending around more emails about how horrible she is, let's all make a donation to Planned Parenthood in Sarah Palin's name.

When you make a donation to PP they'll send a card telling her that the donation has been made in her honor. I'm sure she'll enjoy a flood of thank you cards.

Here's the link to the Planned Parenthood website:

https://secure.ga0.org/02/pp10000_inh...

You'll need to fill in the address to let PP know where to send the "in Sarah Palin's honor" card. I suggest you use the address for the McCain campaign headquarters, which is:

 McCain for President
 1235 S. Clark Street
 1st Floor
 Arlington , VA 22202

PS make sure you use that link above or choose the pulldown of Donate--Honorary or Memorial Donations, not the regular "Donate Online"

DC says:

I guess we have come this far that we can be sold the condescending crap from the Republican campaign and in any way consider Palin's discussion last night as something short of insulting.

It's ridiculous that any of us would accept more of this "Joe six pack" crap as if we are a nation that should expect no better of ourselves other than to be a bunch of beer drunk hillbillies placated with a case of Schlitz and a jug band.

When that latina republican pundit on CNN starts referring to Biden as professorial like it's an insult I have to wonder if she implies that instead we should expect our politicians to read at about an eighth grade level and wink more?

Did no one think her agreement with the Cheney sentiment on the role of the vice president was ludicrous? It's as if to say you're an NBA point guard, but hey, a third hoop, now there's a great idea! I'd personally feel a little better if the vice president had actually some familiarity with the constitution.

I'd like to say it's unbelievable.

By the way, did anyone check to see who was paying the Palin 'supporters' to be there today?

At one point in the debate I wondered if international wires hadn't been crossed and my set was picking up an Israeli election campaign by mistake--both candidates were trying to outgush the other regarding Israel and how much we all just love it and must continue to bankroll it. WTF????

Dunno Clay -- One take on it Says Palin Pro/Con ratio 2 to 1

Not authoritative, but it does seem to have topped 40 (pro / con inclusive) So from that standpoint, you, me and Doyle's apathy was underrepresented.

For reference, this is a handy guide for the mob estimation challenged :

A gathering of 40 (8 basketball teams or 10 hands of bridge or

a reasonable bowling tournament): 40

A throng of over 400 (roughly one third of a DISD Layoff): 416

I tell ya, the blind middle class sheep who follow the neocon agenda represented by McCain/Palin think they care about their needs. In all truthfulness, they dont give a lick about their situation and would turn a buck off their backs without blinking. She came out sounding like an prompter-reading automaton the other night during the debate, nor would give a straight answer, which makes me believe she doesnt have the real chops to step up and lead if McCain decides to have a (God Forbid) heart attack or cancer relapse during his term.

The Sarah Palin (she was in town for a 1k per plate fundraiser) protest held Friday morning in downtown Dallas was great. We had an official count of over 400 protestors on our side; they were out there for over 4 hours! The other side had a few more –so over one thousand people were on the streets of downtown Dallas protesting –it was excellent.

Scott Doyle says:

Once again, why the hell don't you people focus your time and energy on supporting your preferred candidate rather than ragging on the opposition?

This is why people hate politics. You're only hurting voter morale, imo.

Just watched the videos linked..

Unless you are giving bonus points for the obnoxious futility, there was not near 400 people there at all.

Cunninbg: If you had 400 people, and there were a thousand total, the other side had more than "just a few more". Unless you're counting innocent bystanders and such.

Not a judgement call on you, the protest, Sarah Palin, or anything - just trying to check the maths.

Spot on ScoDo!

Clay, I wish to heck we could have been down there counting, but - yawn.

Sure, call me a sheep, but I don't remember seeing this size yoke on a lamb, and I've got a plow to pull weekdays.

My splinter issue? Arts funding. Yeah, they turn out in dozens for that.
