Dallas Baptist University to provide free tuition to post-9/11 U.S. veterans

Dallas Baptist University has taken a leadership position in giving full support to the U.S. Veterans Administration’s new G.I. Bill ― the “Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008” — that goes into effect August 1, 2009.

Under the provisions of its new “Patriot Veteran’s Opportunity Program,” DBU pledges to offer full scholarships and dedicated support services to all veterans receiving benefits through the new G.I. Bill. The main thrust of that new G.I. Bill is to provide tuition assistance up to 100% of the cost at the most-expensive public university in a veteran’s state. Benefits are based upon time spent on active duty. Veterans wishing to attend a private institution, such as DBU, also are eligible for the VA’s new “Yellow Ribbon” program, which bridges any cost gaps between a public and private college education.

According to Dr. Donovan Fredricksen, dean of DBU’s College of Adult Education, many veterans never access the G.I. Bill benefits they deserve, inadvertently allowing those benefits to expire. He has said that DBU is dedicated to correcting this situation.

“Our experiential learning credits and flexible schedules are designed for working adults: veterans especially find this crucially important. We do not want to see anyone postpone their education because they think they cannot balance family, career, and school,” Dr. Fredricksen says. “All students in our College of Adult Education face these same constraints. So DBU works with our students to help them earn their degrees, while balancing their home life and work responsibilities. We want veterans to know that college is an option for them, and that DBU can help them earn the degree they need to succeed, while providing for their families.”

Hats off to an institution that is all about "doing" instead of "talking"!
