Kids and family events in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, April 1-7

It's another jam-packed week of kids and family events. Along with the plethora of storytimes, you have a twist on the normal Easter egg hunt, the next iteration of High School Musical on stage, theater for those who hate capitalization, punctuation, or spelling, Dorothy and Toto backed by an orchestra, and some junk food lovin'.

On Friday, April 3, the Flower Mound Community Activity Center jumps the gun by, oh, a week or so to hold an Easter egg hunt. Oh, but this isn't just any Easter egg hunt -- it's an Underwater Easter Egg Hunt. I don't know about you, but seems like the "hunt" part of it is kind of negated by putting them in water. But the degree of difficulty is definitely increased, especially for weak swimmers.

Also on Friday night (and continuing through the weekend) is Plano Children's Theatre's production of High School Musical 2, which will be North Texas' first chance to see the Disney musical on stage, though it has been presented on ice before.

Friday night is packed, as the Dallas Children's Theater starts its run of the grammatically-challenged dont u luv me? The play, obviously a story for the text generation, is taking place at the Rosewood Center for the Performing Arts and will show on Saturday and Sunday (and several other times in April), as well. (Editor's note: DCT PR Director Lisa Schreiner lets us know that the play "is specifically about dating aggression and violence among teens. We recommend it for teenagers and their parents, ages 13 and up only. It is not appropriate for young children." Thanks for the tip, Lisa.)

The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra gives families the rare opportunity to enjoy The Wizard of Oz with a live orchestra when they present "We're Off to See the Wizard!" at the Bass Performance Hall. Of course, the experience is a bit pricey, with tickets ranging from $26 - $78. Like the two theater performances above, there will be shows on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Finally, for a non-weekend event, make the trek up to Denton on Monday, April 6 for Food Fights at the Denton Public Library (South Branch). Anyone expecting ketchup to be splattered against the stacks will be disappointed, however, as this is actually an opportunity for kids 10 and up to make meals out of junk food. Pediatricians and dentists all over North Texas just fainted.
