UPDATED: Councilman Tennell Atkins defers, Dallas smoking ban still set for April 10
Seeing as how the smoking ban approved by the Dallas City Council back in December is set to go into effect on April 10, councilman Tennell Atkins is speaking up on behalf of some bar owners in an attempt to delay the ban. Atkins says owners have not had sufficient time to get permits to build patios for smokers.
Predictably, others on the council disagree and say they will not approve the delay
UPDATE: Atkins has deferred his delay request, meaning that the ban will still go into effect on Friday, April 10 as planned.

Solution - leave the bar and smoke outside. It works marvelously in other cities.
No delay. I am looking forward to return to the bars once they go smoke free and spend money.

A Dallas smoking ban just sends smokers to adjacent smoking-cities.
If you're going to ban smoking- make it a state-wide ban.
And I see no reason to delay it, it's going to happen sooner or later. Hit me with it!
Let's get on with the show.

Rick, good point. Some people made that point when Plano banned smoking. Pretty soon, everyone will be going to Addison. :)
When I say "everyone", I mean smokers. I won't go to Addison because of the smoke (they even allow it in restaurants).

Now who says Tennell Atkins isn't proactive? He's planning to plead next Wed. which is what, April 8th? Two days before the nada-fumando fun and games are set to begin? It was further said through his spokesperson that Atkins will be making a statement on Global Warming 'some time in 2035'.

I doubt this ban will pass but if it does, peg staffers, would you please change the name of Pearl's Thursday night "Smoke-out with Smokin' Joe Kubek" show to "Still Smokin', with Smokin' Joe Kubek"

Snowboard9: It's been demonstratated again and again that it doesn't work "marvelously" in other cities because the the number of smokers who stop coming, or who leave a lot earlier than they used to, far outweighs the number of pecksniffs like you, who say they're going to become the new regulars--and don't. Seems that when a bar loses its customer base, it stops being "the place to go." Antismokers always promise bars won't lose business and they're always wrong.
