Plano’s Live Green Expo is expensive propaganda
On April 18th, Plano will have it's 3rd annual Live Green Expo at the Plano Centre. It's a show were residents can learn how to live more "green" and vendors can sell "green" products.
The city of Plano's Sustainability Communications Coordinator, Melinda Haggerty, states "Living green and incorporating conservation into a family’s lifestyle does not require much sacrifice".
This year, actor and environmentalist, Ed Begley Jr., will be speaking at the Live Green Expo. Ed has a show on HGTV called Living with Ed. According to the Plano Star Courier, that show is a hit. I don't know what their definition of "hit" is because Ed's show isn't even ranked on the various sites that track these things.
As you know, Plano is in the middle of a multimillion dollar deficit. It has already cut police and fire positions, cut safety department budgets, and raised fees all in an attempt at balancing the budget.
This makes me wonder how much this Living Green Expo is costing the Plano taxpayers. Is this a necessary expense?
UPDATE: The budget for Living Green Expos 2009 is $161,116. To date, they have received $87,980 in revenue from various sources, leaving the Plano taxpayer left with $73,136. This tax revenue comes from the Sustainability and Environmental Services Fund, which is mostly funded by that City of Plano bill you get if you live in Plano.
Ed Begley Jr. charges $10,000 plus $2,000 for travel expenses (First Class). Wow, he sure is dedicated to the environment, isn't he? He makes a very good living preaching the message to anyone willing to pony up thousands of dollars for a single day's work. Maybe he'll make enough money to buy a 100-foot house boat like Al Gore did with some of the millions he has made from environmentalism.
If you read the Plano budget PDF, you'll see a department labeled Environmental Indoctrination, I mean Education & Community Outreach. The purpose of this city government department is to "'Educate' and involve citizens of all ages in activities promoting beautification, environmental stewardship and waste diversion including recycling, composting, household chemical collection, litter reduction, and electronic recycling."
I have the 2007-2008 budget PDF on my computer, not the latest. In that budget, the Environmental Education & Community Outreach department had 9 full-time employees at a cost of $585,750. In 2005-06, they spent $355,592 on salaries. That's a 40% increase in just 2 years. The total budget for the department is $800,761. Personally, I'd rather spend $585,750 on police officers or detectives or firefighters than people whose purpose is to indoctrinate the public on recycled toilet paper and compost piles. Plano has already had 4 murders in 2009 after the murder and rape rates in 2008 jumped over 100%.
They spent $72,749 on a Living Green calendar! Yep, your tax dollars are being used to create a calendar and then mail it to every resident of Plano, every year. Indoctrination isn't cheap.
If the Plano city council, mayor and city manager are really serious about cutting out unnecessary spending, this should be the first thing that gets the axe, not safety.
Please call or send them an email and tell them to not waste your tax dollars on green propaganda.

You don't really do your side any favors when all you can muster is "you're a racist" or "you're a neo-con" or "you're bitter". Great logic you have there.
The city budget for Live Green is $161,116. The revenue, so far, is $87,980 to this date, leaving the rest to the tax payers.

You aren't taking over in Collin County. The last election had typical results. Feel free to screw up Dallas County, though. I see you guys are trying to squeeze more money out of the suburbs to subsidize your liberal spending.
"Feel free to move somewhere more to your liking..."
No, it's much better here than where I just moved from, California, because it's a Red county in a Red state. Your policies are doing great in California, aren't they? 10.5% unemployment for the better? 8% income tax for all income over $47K, 6% for over $37K? Why don't you move there, since Liberals run things.

This kind of blogging, (and that's all it is..not journalism), is just baiting. tallscot uses the term "liberal" as if it encompasses anyone who doesn't believe or agree with his version of what a Republican is. It is the same old generalizations that the Bush admin used to lump together terrorists and those who showed any form of dissent. Or who were disruptive on an airplane for that matter.
Texas politics has been ruled by the Republican party for a long time, but someone who had lived here for a while would know that, instead of making it seem like Republicans are some dieing breed around here.

"tallscot uses the term "liberal" as if it encompasses anyone who doesn't believe or agree with his version of what a Republican is"
I find the regulars on this thread who can't actually discuss the issues but resort to ad hominem comments to be a bit predictable already.
Republican is a political party. Liberalism is a worldview or philosophy, like conservatism. There are liberal Republicans and conservative Democrats.
"It is the same old generalizations that the Bush admin used to lump together terrorists and those who showed any form of dissent"
Dissent isn't patriotic anymore since Obama has been elected. Haven't you heard?
I don't see what this has to do with Plano taxpayers spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on a green "education".
"Texas politics has been ruled by the Republican party for a long time, but someone who had lived here for a while would know that, instead of making it seem like Republicans are some dieing breed around here."
I moved here in 1975, went to school in Richardson, graduated from Berkner High School. I moved to California in 1994 and moved back with a wife and two kids in 2006 because California is a total mess, because of liberal policies.
Does that make me qualified?

Ya know, tallscot, your ad hominim attacks and slaps at people like Begley, and Obama, and liberals, and "liberal definitions" merely remove all logic from what you have attempted to put forth. By not addressing the substance of the argument -- by simply going back on the attack at others here and "others afar" you paint a big red target on your forehead.
You need to sit back, grow up, take a chill pill, maybe call mother's little helper, and realize that there are a lot of people here that disagree with what you write and how you push back. It's very unbecoming, it gains you no points except in your head, and it's rapidly becoming a complete waste of time to respond back.

Chris,
Just because I look at the cost and lack of effectiveness of light rail does not mean I think we should throw motor oil in our creeks.
Light rail doesn't make a measurable difference on air quality - period. We covered that in great detail, including how inefficient electric trains are with the majority of the energy (created by polluting power plants) being wasted in transmission, etc.
Richard Nixon created the E.P.A. I think there is common sense protection of our environment needed. Saying conservatives don't care about the environment isn't historically accurate.
There are plenty of private organizations spreading the "green" movement's word. Whatever my personal view of these solutions is, it doesn't matter - I don't believe it's the role of my government to create a $72,000 calendar and have a ~$75,000 Live Green Expo. I believe in low taxation and letting me keep more of my own money so that I may choose which causes I want to donate money, or time, to.

As an employee of the Sustainability & Environmental Services (SES) Department, I need to clarify a few points made in your article. (1) Funding for environmental education and community outreach (including Expo) comes from the residential refuse fee, franchise fees, compost sales, recycling revenue, grants and miscellaneous revenue. No taxes are used to fund any of the services provided by SES. (2) All environmental services (collections of trash, recycling, yard trimmings, household chemicals, litter and appliances, composting, education (presentations, training, seminars, demonstrations, Plano Community Garden, Environmental Discovery Center, education material, volunteer program), and sustainability initiatives costs each Plano resident $15.10 or $11.25 depending on cart size. (3) SES Enterprise Funds cannot be used to hire more police officers. (4) The budget for the Live Green Expo is $161,116. To date, we have received $87,980 in revenue. (5) The contract for Ed Begley, Jr. is $10,000 plus $2,000 travel expense. (6) The comparison between budgets is inaccurate – you compare 2005-06 audited numbers with 07-08 budgeted numbers. The audited 07-08 cost was $437,647 which included the addition of one employee.

Yes, Plano got back to me after Pegasus published this article without notifying me and I posted the Live Green Expo budget figures and revenue in this thread.
The issue about fees versus taxes is irrelevant to me. It's six on one hand, half a dozen on the other. I give money to the city via various forms and the city provides services with that money. It's still the tax payers' money. Maybe Plano can lower their "fee" if they have so much money they can spend $72,000 on a calendar.
The increase in the budget over the last two years was 19%, using the figures you gave me.
The issue of police officers versus Live Green Expo is valid. I have corrected my blog on my site.

Plano subsidizes Dallas County schools to the tune of $87 million last year alone, for a total of $1.2 billion, because of Robin Hood. You are welcome.
Plano subsidizes Dallas by giving DART ~$60 million every single year for nowhere near $60 million worth of services. You are welcome.
Collin County subsidizes Dallas by giving hundreds of millions in state taxes every single year and getting a tiny fraction in return from the state. You are welcome.
Seriously, why do people think $5.6 million in unpaid bills by a few individuals who live in Collin County equals the hundreds of millions the Collin County governments kick into Dallas every single year? It's hilarious.
Dallas has been leaching the suburbs for decades now.

Dallas ISD pays into Robin Hood too, but I suppose it's too much to ask that you get your facts straight. As we've already seen by the smack down girlabouttown delivered to your rant earlier on this thread you and the truth don't walk hand in hand all that often.
Plano voted itself into DART and has the option of leaving if they so desire, your gripe isn't with Dallas or any other member city but with the people that run the city you seem so proud of. You can move to another city that is not a member of DART such as Frisco, Allen or McKinney and remain in Collin County. Or perhaps you could put your money where your mouth is by starting a referendum to get Plano out of DART.
I actually agree with you that the use of city funds, however they were collected, for something like a Green Expo is questionable. Especially when you have other needs that might be deemed more urgent. However you bend facts, sometimes you're flat out wrong and you attack with the fervor or a hungry pittbull.
I used to vote Republican but it was those of your ilk that so disgusted me with their "my way or the highway" mantra that I find myself leaning more and more to the left. "Dallas ISD pays into Robin Hood too, but I suppose it's too much to ask that you get your facts straight."
So your implication that Plano doesn't pay its share is patently false. Plano pays more than its fair share.
"Plano voted itself into DART and has the option of leaving if they so desire, your gripe isn't with Dallas or any other member city but with the people that run the city you seem so proud of"
You are deflecting. You made a snide comment about Parkland Hospital fees and said, "Thank you Plano for doing your very small part." Plano does a lot more than that.
"However you bend facts, sometimes you're flat out wrong and you attack with the fervor or a hungry pittbull"
I don't bend facts. I used the information I had. Once the city gave me the information, I corrected the blog. I'm not perfect. Nobody is.
What the employee of Plano said doesn't change my opinion, or yours apparently, that Live Green Expo is a waste of tax payer money. The only logic I used that was corrected with her information was the fact that the green propaganda budget is separate from the general budget, so the original comments I made about police were flawed. I deleted them.
"I used to vote Republican but it was those of your ilk that so disgusted me with their "my way or the highway" mantra that I find myself leaning more and more to the left"
Yes, because Nancy Pelosi and Obama are being inclusive and bi-partisan? Ha!
I don't really care about you personally. I'd love it if we could just stick to the topic about Live Green Expo and calendars being something that is not the role of the government. We agree on that. Why fight with me?
"Your biggest problem is that you have no tact and drive away those who otherwise might agree with you in principle on some of the subjects you address"
