Rowlett to break ground on DART Blue Line extension from Garland to Rowlett on Thursday April 9
The City of Rowlett will officially break ground on the 4.5-mile extension of the DART Blue Line from downtown Garland to historic downtown Rowlett on Thursday, April 9 at 10 a.m.
“This is an exciting and historic day for the City of Rowlett,” said Mayor John Harper. “We celebrate and recognize the DART Blue Line extension as precisely the economic engine we need to foster development downtown. With the arrival of light rail, Rowlett will become one of the most attractive destinations for living, working and playing in the region. As the DART Board Chairman said in January when they approved the construction contract, we are ‘ready to roll’ on this monumental endeavor!”
Scheduled speakers at the groundbreaking include Rowlett Mayor John Harper, Dallas County Commissioner Mike Cantrell, DART Board Chairman Randall D. Chrisman, DART board member and former Rowlett Mayor Mark C. Enoch, DART President/Executive Director Gary C. Thomas and Garland Mayor Ronald Jones.
Following a traditional gold shovel groundbreaking ceremony near the railroad tracks on Coyle Street in Rowlett, officials will move inside the infamous Big Star Burgers to cut a ceremonial cake replica of a DART light rail train and enjoy a “good old fashioned” Big Star Burgers reception.
Commemorative gold-plated, engraved railroad spikes will be on sale at the event for $10 to raise funds for the purchase of a special tree, which will be dedicated at the opening of the future Rowlett Rail Station in 2012. Commemorative ‘retro’ posters will also be given to every guest, while supplies last.
Funding for the $188 million project, which is scheduled for completion in December 2012, is included in DART’s 20-year Financial Plan. Already, stacks of rail have been placed in the construction area north of Main Street in anticipation of the start of construction.

That...and a few million in subsidies from the city.

Wouldn't it be awesome if we could go to Vegas and bet against DART budgets and timelines? We'd become very wealthy.

LOL. Good one.
$655 million for 4 miles of monorail. It must have really good looking showgirls at that price. ;)
