Dallas-based Neiman Marcus has another round of layoffs

In the parlance of the business, Dallas-based Neiman Marcus "cut 131 jobs" Tuesday in their most recent round of layoffs, which now number 825 since January. These "cuts" involved sales and marketing positions across the country, though most of the marketing jobs were in Dallas.

Is it just me or is "cutting jobs" an easy way of being dispassionate about 131 people losing their livelihoods? Or if some of these positions were unfilled, why not just say that?

I wanted to work for this company so bad last year. Why don't they change things up and not keep themselves so exclusive. I understand wanting to keep up with the company standard but i'm not going to go to Nieman Marcus looking for a good deal.

If you're looking for compassion Alex, you might be shopping in the wrong isle.

Compassion would be refusing to sell the Burberry Satin Check Trench Coat for $995.00. Even in a good economy. No matter how gorgeous it is.

I don't think that their target audience is people looking for a good deal.

The flagship store/company office building in downtown is interesting to visit -- though it feels like wandering through a mausoleum.

-- besides actual cuts in salaries and "layoffs"--

Neimans has cut the sales peoples earnings 20% by ordering the salaried "product specialists" in each department to meet a quota---

So- besides the 30% drop in sales (translates to 30% drop in a sales persons commission)- Neimans already took 20% from them through the product specialists (who don't earn a penny in commission on those sales-- therefore- that 20% goes to the store!)

and then...

they've been browbeating dept managers, sales people and product specialists because they aren't making their goals!

(ah.... who does make a goal when sales are down 30% ??)

and to make it worse....

they use inflated goals, submarined by competition between sales and product specialists- to fire employees for bad performance- saving Neimans from lay-off severance, unemployment etc...

abhorrent behavior for any principled business- outrageous for a previoulsy well thought off company like Neimans....
