Minority leaders hope cultural advisory committee can help Dallas police force and its reputation
Leaders with local NAACP chapters started gathering names Wednesday for a cultural diversity committee that can help the Dallas Police Department improve its relationship with the city’s minority communities. The issue of the committee was raised Tuesday afternoon when the NAACP and several other African American and Latino leaders met with Dallas Police Chief David Kunkle and his assistant chiefs.
Irving NAACP Chapter President, Anthony Bond says "This was the perfect time to meet. The recent video of an officer refusing to allow an African American couple to see their dying loved one revealed that some wearing the badge need sensitivity training." Dallas police officer Robert Powell resigned a week ago after a video was broadcast nationwide showing him detaining an NFL player outside a hospital where his mother-in-law was on her deathbed. Chief Kunkle made a public apology soon after the video surfaced. The police department was bombarded by emails and calls from angry people here and around the country.
Dallas Police Department Spokesman, Lt. Andy Harvey says "The meeting was positive and productive. Chief Kunkle is open to any suggestions and comments that can make the department better." The DPD has a diversity committee, but Lt. Harvey says that it has been inactive for some time.
NAACP Dallas Chapter President, Juanita Wallace spearheaded Tuesday’s meeting. She says "An advisory committee made up of minority leaders will keep the Chief in touch with what we are thinking and feeling. Right now, there is a perception out there that police officers just like to beat up on blacks and browns. The video just added to our fears."
According to Lt. Harvey, officers are required to have state mandated training on ethics and diversity. Wallace adds "The chief may not like what the advisory committee will have to say, but at least he will know there’s an issue that needs to be resolved."
Wallace recommended police officers get ongoing training on diversity and sensitivity issues. She says "If you look at the research you have to have refresher courses, because good training doesn't always stick the first time. If Powell would have had more diversity training maybe this wouldn’t have happened."
DPD spokesman Lt. Harvey adds "We can teach our officers values and give them good training, but at the end of the day we don't know what’s in their hearts when they’re alone. We can only hope they make the right choices and decisions."

I am feeling incredibly underrepresented in this society.
You would think that people who have been “victimized” by exclusionary behavior would at least make an effort to be, well, inclusive.

Do you think that maybe you feel under-represented because in the past our race has been over-represented? I mean, are you feeling under-represented or are you just feeling your privileges being taken away?

You know, we shouldn't have to teach our public servants how to treat people. I mean, how many of these monkeys go to church every Sunday, yet treat their fellow humans like crap when they put on the badge? Simpler yet, how about stricter hiring policies and some kind of test to see how new officers react around large groups of minorities, or different people?
One hopes this kind of advisory board helps, but I'm not holding my breath.

Wait...I had privileges? Forgive me, perhaps I am blinded by my own whiteness but are you insinuating that it should be a privilege to walk down the street or drive my car without fear of brutality or harassment?
How about the way officers act towards ALL people? You know, as in the all men are created equal sorta way?

I don't believe police brutality is as big a problem for white people as it is for others. Also, when we get stopped for braking some traffic law or another, don't we get sent on our way with a stern warning half the time? My understanding is that this really doesn't happen for people other than the pasty kind.
Beyond that, if a police brutality tape against a white person made the news, the police officer would receive the kind of criminal charges that stick. Our voting base would not stand for it, because the voting base is mostly white.

Oh really, you mean like this guy?
Are you certain that it never happens to white people or is it just underreported because there are no special interest groups there to exploit it?

Breakdown of the makeup of the rank and file of DPD:

While Whites are obviously over-represented by 16%, Blacks are over-represented by 54%. Males are of course heinously over represented by more than 70%.
I say let women and Hispanics have their day wearing bullet magnets. They will naturally be more even handed.

Don't believe me, go to Dallas County jail look-up and put in any random letter in the first and last name slot, no birthday is needed, pick a gender, and alternate between the race choices: Hispanic and Nonhispanic.

Our voting base would not stand for it, because the voting base is mostly white.
You realize Texas has been considered a majority-minority state for some time, right? And apparently it's been said you can narrow that down to Dallas County just the same.
2nd link is a rent-to-own industry news site, btw, which made me laugh uncontrollably for a bit. Regardless, I'd take its credibility over the comment of a self-hating white any day.
If you really want to throw yourself into their shoes as a minority, you could always move to El Paso!

That's another good indicator JV. If you want to spend life wallowing in guilt guided and aided in self loathing by media on every side, that's the way to go. If you're more interested in small business loans, grants, carefully managed and directed municipal contracts, scholarships and being the demographic darling of Madison Avenue for the next decade, then I'd leverage that name of yours a lot.

Do you buy groceries at Fiesta Mart or something?
Btw, since I went there, just so you know that I'm an equal-opportunity grocery offender...I've needed groceries for about a week now, but waited until today and shopped at the kosher Tom Thumb at Preston and Forest. Was basically hoping a lot of the Jewish community also waited until Easter so they could avoid everyone who may or may not despise them.
Decent amount of yarmulkes, but not nearly what I was anticipating. The best laid plans...

You're telling me Jewish peeps don't buy food throughout Passover? Are you denying Easter being an opportune time?!
Dunno, just something that popped in my head and thought I'd scope out. Don't judge my sociology experiment!
Store definitely had more peeps in general than I anticipated. Definitely didn't think I'd have to wait in line at the register. Pretty disappointing Easter trip to the market all around, come to think of it. :(

The Tom Thumb by UTD has a Kosher section which contains my ultimate meal: bouillon-free vegetarian ramen! I love them for that. Otherwise, the store is a little over-priced.
To the topic... No, I do not hate white people. Some of my best friends are white...j/k. It's just that I try to keep my eyes open and if you really do, the truth is that white people really have a lot of privilege. This privilege is slowly eroding as our minority populations find their voices and we will slowly find our authorities behaving more fairly. Fairness will probably lead white people to believe the police have become less forgiving, but I have a hard time seeing how this is a bad thing. Three year-olds only notice unfairness and discrimination when it's against them. Adults should be able to see it when someone else is getting the shaft.

Colleen, self-hating white and simply hating whites altogether is a bit different, but whatevs.
Seems contradictory to think any kind of true equality will result from playing the race card every chance you get (apparently it's becoming more and more unjustified, [insert comment about our having a black pres]). Always looking out for ol' numero uno isn't exactly the path, anyways. Just as being entirely selfless probably won't get us there either.
