Fort Worth ISD board approves “early notice” teacher bonus

Fort Worth ISD teachers may be eligible for a $300 bonus if they notify the District by May 15, 2009 if they plan to resign or retire. The bonus is eligible to the first 400 teachers who notify the District of their retirement.

The Fort Worth ISD Board of Education approved the expenditure as a way to give principals additional time to fill key teaching slots for the 2009-2010 school year.

In a recent news article featured in USA TODAY, the National Commission on Teaching and America's Future warns that a significant number of “Baby Boomer” teachers will retire in the coming decade.

“We have many experienced teachers who are reaching that point where they are thinking about life beyond teaching,” said Superintendent Melody Johnson. “We are just asking them to share their decision with us so we can plan for the District’s future.”

Classroom teachers who are resigning due to lack of certification are not eligible to participate in this program. However, teachers who have already submitted paperwork to resign or retire at the end of their current contract will be eligible for the payment.

Additional information is available from the District’s Human Resources office at 817-871-2200.
