Woman driver dodges bullet in far north Dallas

It may be true that "close" only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades, but try telling that to Debra Mortenson, whose driver's side window was shattered by a bullet during an apparent road rage incident Thursday afternoon (April 16).

Mortenson was driving north on Midway (near Frankford) when the driver of an older-model dark blue sedan pulled up beside her and blasted away. Mortenson ended up with a cut on her arm from the window glass and a heightened appreciation for living and breathing; she has no idea what caused the assailant to shoot at her.

Police say the shooter - if apprehended - will face assault with a deadly weapon charges.

What's the difference between assault with a deadly weapon and murder?

Is it just the premeditation?

Proof of intent. Assuming you meant attempted murder.

Right, them's what I meant.

Yeah, it's all coming back to me. I remember something about gangsters shooting each other in the ass and holding their guns funny because that way, they could argue in court that it wasn't attempted murder since the injuries inflicted wouldn't be life-threatening.

God, why do I know that and where did I read it?

These kinds of incidents are becoming too common in the Dallas area. Note: Frankford Road runs east to west,I think. I know this area well, because I travel there often. Hope they catch the jerk!

abcd, thanks for the catch re. orientation of Frankford. (I've corrected the sentence.) Call me dyslexic, just don't call me late for the lifting of the trade embargo against Cuba.

While this incident is obviously troubling, it's amazing to me that it doesn't happen on a daily basis because of the way so many people drive - running red lights, tail-gating you when the cars ahead of you can't go any faster, numerous lane changes when it's obvious you aren't going to save any time.

Just yesterday some idiot was tail-gating me when I couldn't pass the cars ahead of me. Then we got on a two lane road she finally passed me driving well over the posted 35 MPH limit when:

 1. It was obvious she would have to stop at the next light down the road.

 2. There was motorcycle cop shooting radar ahead of us.

She was so caught-up in her own little world of racing to the next light that she didn't even see the cop until he lit-up his lights.

People, try to remember things are going on OUTSIDE of your car when you're driving. And, when you only drive 10 - 30 miles in town, driving fast like a madman isn't going to save but at most a few minutes of time, or it may take longer when you're pulled over.

I'm sorry, 'assault with a deadly weapon' is not near enough. If the bullet shattered her driver window, it was more than likely aimed at her. Even if it wasn't- a loud, in-your-face (literally) near-death experience while behind the wheel, could have caused a lethal wreck.
I would have probably filled my pants and run into another car or light-pole while screaming like a little girl.

What is wrong with these people?

Agreed! This should be a Zero Tolerance crime. Just imagine the people around her she could have hit and killed!

dallas - Thank you for not road raging on this idiot. Sad that I feel you should receive an award or something!
