Denton to introduce recycling program at jazz festival

The City of Denton is kicking-off a new Parks and Special Event Recycling Program at the Denton Arts and Jazz Festival in Quakertown Park, April 24-26. The new program includes blue recycling barrels for bottles and cans that will be permanently located throughout the park next to green trash barrels. Several special activities are scheduled to educate and excite festival goers about the new recycling program.

Recycle. Don’t Litter! Denton Recycles is teaming with Keep Denton Beautiful to host volunteer clean ups each night by the Jazz Stage after the headliner act. Volunteers will be asked to help clean up and recycle as the crowd is leaving. Participants will receive a free, organic cotton T-shirt, limit 50 per night; sizes and availability are limited on a first-come, first-served basis.

Denton Recycles in the Parks! Denton Recycles asked high-school art students to submit entries for special graphics-covered recycle containers to celebrate the new Parks Recycling Program. The top three winning entries will be printed on permanent recycling containers for use at Quakertown Park. The winning containers will be unveiled during the Denton Arts and Jazz Festival on Friday, April 24, on the Festival Stage at 4:45 p.m. Student art entries will also be on display in the Denton Recycles booth during the festival.

Lindsay Preston, City of Denton Recycling Education Coordinator said, “I’m so excited that we had such a positive response to the art contest with more than 40 entries! The three recycling containers are very unique and the bold colors are sure to attract public attention, serving as a reminder to recycle everywhere you go in Denton.”

The new recycling program is a result of the Special Event Recycling Resolution passed by the Denton City Council last year, requiring that all events that take place on City property offer recycling to their attendees.

“Public-space recycling is a rapidly growing movement in many cities throughout the country. The City of Denton’s permanent Parks recycling containers will promote a culture of away-from-home recycling by providing convenient recycling access to park visitors,” said Monica Maxwell, Recycling Programs Coordinator. “This comprehensive public-access recycling program is a great way for park visitors and event attendees to reduce their waste by recycling on-the-go!”
